Joss Whedon, the beloved creator of Buffy, Angel and Firefly visited the Sydney Opera House earlier this year, and had a chat with us.
Here he is sitting in Bennelong, just before his sold out on-stage performance. Whatever you think of Joss' work, from rapture to revulsion, it cannot be denied that the man is a beacon of niceness, and an eloquent speaker.
Here's a snippet of the longer interview that focuses on his thoughts on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Perhaps it may shed some illumination on the current TrueBuff Marathon - running until 7:30pm on Tuesday the 26th.
The 'click' for Buffy? "High School WAS a horror movie."
If you do want to hear about Buffy, from the creator himself, feast upon this:

Joss Whedon Explains Angel
Saturday, April 23 by Captain
Joss Whedon's most famous creation is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but there are legions of fans who enjoy Angel, the spin-off show that stars David Boreanaz.
In this interview, Joss talks about the creation of his vampire detective. The focus of the noire aspect of the show, and how the hero of the show really wasn't an analogue for its creator, but in fact a version of the people who used to beat him up at school.
Reinventing the show each season, tearing his hero down to build him up again: it's a fascinating insight into one of TV's most gifted writers.

I don't believe it. He actually admitted he doesn't know how to write Angel. We've always known he couldn't. Greenwalt seems to be the one who "got" Angel. It's not Joss fault', but it explains why he is less hands on.
Angel is a character he struggles to comprehend, and he think he struggles to comprehend why people are so fond of him. I've never agreed with JW saying that Spike is more evolved because Angel, Spike, Buffy, Xander, Jonathan etc are all different creatures, different species on different paths and I don't think comparisons can be made of that nature. Yes, I've always enjoyed a bit of fun in the whole "Who'd win a fight?" discussions, but making overarching critiques of who a person/character is can't really be done because evolved for one may be primitive for another, if that makes sense. I mean, everyone is different. Every day we, like fictional characters, face challenges. What I find easy others will struggle with, so when they overcome that it is not my place to belittle it. Their evolution is different to mine and no one is more evolved than anyone else, IMO, because we are all individuals on different roads.
Wow, rant, but that thought just came to me when he said that he doesn't understand who Angel is. Made me wonder why he makes overarching statements about him in comparison to others.
Interesting interview. _________________ I'm so glad I'm an Asshole! |

Just proves more and more that Angel was more Greenwalt's show then Joss's. _________________ I rather read a good non-canon story, then a bad canon story.

I always suspected Joss was not very involved in angel, this kinda confirms it
which makes it more frustraiting he demanded it back when he didnt seem to care much about it or get it |

| This helped me understand why season 8 wrote Angel so badly. |

Angel keeps messing up because Joss only sees him as a hero when he makes a mistake and then tries to atone, although Angelus could be the only motivation he'd need there. Hence, no need for Twilight.
The message I got from the early years of Angel was not that Angel was a hero because he failed and atoned. That was his initial motivation, yes, but he was a hero because he helped people because they needed help. No reward. No big win. Just helping for the sake of helping because people don't deserve to suffer. How Joss can't understand that aspect of his character, I don't know. This is just a lowly fan saying this. _________________ I'm so glad I'm an Asshole! |
