Ask away! Ask me anything about SPIKE, or ANGEL, or hey, HOP, if you want. I'm an open book.
Questions like "Did Joss do ___________" will be answered with my favorite fact about the greatest band ever, THE BANGLES. |

Hello Brian, amazing job on the Angel and Spike series! You are a one of the best writers around. You actually inspired me to write. And now for my questions
1) Was that actually a senior partner in the last issue of Spike, or just a demon as the conduit for one? A conduit the same way that demon was wearing the ring in the Angel season 2 episode: Reprise.
2) Is there a series that you would like to write for? I can see you really turning it up in SuperNatural.
3) How did you like Angel's last arc, including the familiar last page of issue #44 ? |

1) I like to think of the senior partners having many demon bodies standing by that they can switch out of like suits. Of course, whatever is coming is bigger than them (or at least something they don't want to face off against) so they're packing up what's important to them and leaving. But we left it up in the air as to WHAT version (actual bodies, conduits, shells) of the Senior Partners Spike was dealing with, in case someone wants to get specific about them down the line.
2) None that I can think of that are currently on the air. My friend is a show-runner on VAMPIRE DIARIES but I don't know if I'd be a good match for that. I'd rather create my own series at this point. I WOULD give writing for THE OFFICE or COMMUNITY or PARKS AND REC a shot, if they'd have me. That would be a fun world to play in.
3. Oh I loved it. Mariah and Tischman are just stellar, aren't they? They're amazing. |

1) Ah, that makes sense.
2) Vampire Diaries is a great show. It can only benefit if you wrote for it. Well, since Joss directed an episode of The Office, maybe he can put in a good word for you? :p And whatever new story you create for IDW, it will surely be great.
3) I completely agree.
Thank you for answering my questions. I look forward to the Angel Yearbook. |

| Is it true you will be able to use the asylum characters like Beck and George if you want, or do they belong to Joss? |

I think you would be an excellent writer for Vampire Diaries! Great show.
Congratulations on the huge success of your movie and finally, thank you so very much for the time and thought you put into writing Angel and the other characters. We appreciate you.
1. Would it be possible for you to write for Buffy or Angel, season 9? Or are you obligated to only write for IDW?
2. Any plans to get your own series for t.v?
3. 5 words or less, how would you describe Angel the character to a new fan of the series? _________________

What is the significance of this line from the old man character:
"they're stunned. confused. distracted by..."
"...distracted by Spike, actually. Wow, it's nice how thiese things work out."
Is this intended as a comment on chaos working against the best laid plans - or does it have a direct connection to the story?
What about the dinosaurs depicted with this character? |

If you would have been given the chance to write a series for another Angel character, which would it have been? (Spike and Angel excluded)
Between everything you wrote for AtF and Spike, which character did you find the hardest to write? |

I am not really sure. I think they're owned by Fox. Which is totally cool, I hope someone does something with them down the line. I'll miss the characters like the dickens but I have a lot of other characters floating around my head, so it's okay.
But man, would love to do another TOK story. I miss her.
I toyed with killing Beck in issue 8, you can obviously see where it WOULD have happened, but I kept her alive for two reasons. 1) I adore these characters, and if this is her last story, I prefer to think of Beck going off and living her life out there in the Whedonverse. 2) It would have made the end of the book very maudlin, I wanted Spike to be triumphant (somewhat) in the last couple of pages.
Jeremy's roll in the book, by the way, was to show Spike that maybe he shouldn't bring anyone with him on the bug ship. Jeremy was like a fish out of water among the bigger goings-on, and Spike saw this. So that's why he cut ties with everyone, pursued the big bads without them. |

Great question. Some of the stories I'd like to do somewhere else (not in the Whedonverse) so I won't go into details on them, but Jeremy would have had a really sad ending. His fiancee would have been a big, big part of the first story, and would have been weirded out/scared of this world, so she would have left him. This would have led to him being with Beck a year or so down the line (my plans were for the long-haul) but he would have died soonafter. In a horrible, horrible way that I will share someday. So I guess it's kinda great for Jeremy that the series ended when it did. He's off, happy and married and alive. |

1. I'm definitely not contracted to only write for IDW, I can write anywhere. Scott Allie has been really nice, and open to talking about continuing my involvement in the Whedonverse, but right now, I really want to try a new world to play in.
2. In terms of TV and filmwork, I'm exclusive to Universal for a few more months, so whatever they want me to do, I do. Got a lot of stuff brewing.
3. I tried, I can't in five words or less. I'd go with "Noble Tragic Vampire Saving the Day" but that's too many words. |

That quote is simply the fact that they were trying to distract Spike with Drusilla, but Spike wound up providing a distraction for THEM.
Dinosaurs were a lovely Franco touch. But it would look like the bugs encountered a certain ship at one point, and liked the decor. |

Wow, great questions! I would do a Groo storyline that explained where the hell he went (spoilers: it was supposed to be revealed what happened to him after he wandered away from Spike but it was cut for length, sorry guys...he was in a bar vaguely remembering that he was supposed to help Spike, the effects of W & H's spell wearing off).
Hardest character to write: I'd say Dru, because she was in a weird "slight more sane" period which hasn't been done much, and because he dialog is SO specific. If I hadn't been on working on HOP I would have been able to watch more of her episodes and REALLY nail it, I just know it. |

In Spike #1 we saw people getting attacked by beetles, and in a later issue Spike's team were attacked by flying insects. Finally, we got the alien bugs. Was it just a coincidence that we had all these bugs in the series, or was it meant as a recurring theme?
What was the reason for the beetle attacks and all the other bad things going on in Vegas, that drew Spike to go and investigate? Apparently W&H was behind all those events. They attracted a lot of attention, so it almost seems like W&H were actively trying to lure Angel or others from his team to Las Vegas. If so, why? Or was it really just incompetent W&H employees messing up the "slow roll-out", as Lilah suggested? A related question is why W&H were trying to rebuild in Vegas if the Senior Partners were actually planning to leave this dimension. Sounds like a pointless exercise. Or did they start the rebuild before they found out about Twilight?
Also I wondered why W&H told John the lie about Spike getting "his" soul. This must have happened around the same time that Spike got his soul back, otherwise the deception would have not have worked. So does this mean that W&H had been planning to use John as a weapon against Spike years ago already? That's surprising, because I would have thought that Spike didn't appear on the W&H radar until AtS S5. But maybe I'm overthinking things.
I was happy with the reveal that Dru had been sane since Hell-A, because this explained why she seemed so uncharacteristically lucid until she got her soul back. Also, Spike unknowingly driving her insane again by returning her soul made for some nice drama. But what I don't understand is why Spike didn't notice that Dru had changed. He'd spent 100+ years with an insane Dru, and is generally pretty observant, so it seems strange that he never noticed the difference.
Those were the easy questions, now for the really difficult one: what is your favourite Bangles song? (Personally I think Going Down to Liverpool was their best, but I also have a fondness for Manic Monday.) |
