Thanks for this Q&A opportunity, Mariah! I have some more art questions.
How are the artists chosen? Do you have a "stable" of artists to choose from and it just depends on which ones are available? Or do they have to "audition" for the job? And, just curious, why are so many of your artists Italian? Coincidence, or...? |

1. Where can I sign up as a volunteer?
| Mariah wrote: | | [...] I keep all of this mapped out at the office. Without my big old timeline chart, I get all messed up. :} |
2. What sources have you included in this timeline? When you create a new story, what previous stories do you check up with to see if the continuity holds? Obviously, both TV series, then there's AAtF, SAtF, and the Angel ongoing (including probably Lorne: Music of the Spheres, Angel Annual, and Only Human). But how about Blood & Trenches, Barbary Coast, Angel vs Frankenstein? And how about Asylum and Shadow Puppets? (They're semi-canon, although Brian has indicated that he finds them difficult to reconcile with the show's continuity.) How about IDW's pre-AAtF efforts? How about Dark Horse's products? Season 8 is a given, but what about Tales of the Slayers, Tales of the Vampires, and Fray? Do you give their non-canon comics any attention? How about the novels? Are they included in this continuity you keep track of?
PS: If the above at all sounds like an attack, then please except my apologies for poor phrasing; rest assured its not intended that way. In a verse where every fan is very much trying to find a good definition of what canon really is, it would be nice to hear the opinion of someone on the inside (even if it's perhaps a slightly biased person :p). Also, I'm not actually asking for your definition of the canon, but your definition of the continuity. The difference being of course Joss' official seal of worshipabiliworthfulness-something-something. |
1. Heh. You'd probably need to work in the office. :}
2. It doesn't, don't worry. :]
I use the show, AtF, and obviously Aftermath, and anything Brian did after AtF. The stuff that came before the ongoing we don't really contradict, but it doesn't factor into what I've put together very much . They were all done very early on and are largely stand alone stories. And you do have to focus a bit on what influences the current stories directly. Something like Barbary Coast we see as part of the continuity, for instance, but it's so far back you're not going to see too many current refs.
In terms of sources, I fact checked things from the show for dates like Angel's souling, when he came to the states, etc. And then also timelines from the show, per season, of where characters went, what they did, important arcs they had, etc. An example would be keeping track of how many times Angel has been Angelus and what the outcome was. The show is less specific datewise when it's not an "in time" story, but there are obviously timelines for each season and you don't want to ref something from Season 5 that was reconciled in Season 6, as something that's unresolved. So we watch that very carefully.

We do have people submit samples, usually of character likenesses, depending on the series. Fox has to approve artists so, that's why you'll often see repeat artists. They're already approved and we know how great their work is. Often you'll see new artists with a new storyline since the story changes somewhat, or because there's going to be a different feel for the book. But a lot of it is availability. No artist can draw 24/7 without a limb falling off.
We don't have a stable, but we do work with David Messina and Elena a lot, who are part of a studio, because they are so incredibly wonderful to work with and deliver great pages on time. Monthly comics are very time consuming and deadlines are a huge factor. When you get people who can turn around a book in a set number of weeks, you keep 'em for as long as you can. :} |

Hey Mariah. Some questions regarding the hardcovers and collected editions. And continuity.
I was wondering what reasons were for starting the Willingham/Williams hardcover back at #1 again? I thought it would have been #7. When the new creative team begins after Willingham leaves, will it start back at #1 again, or will the numbers on the spine continue to count forward?
I really loved the Lorne oneshot. Will that be collected in a trade-paperback or hardcover someday, or will it always be its own book?
I was a little disappointed that the "Immortality for Dummies" hardcover didn't have a cover gallery! There were some awesome covers to those issues. Would it be possible to include those covers in the second hardcover?
Final question: I can't remember whether or not the "soul eater" villain has actually been referred to as a "soul eater" in the book, or whether that's just something the fans have dubbed her. The reason I bring it up was because in the season four episode "Calvary" there's a creature called a "soul-eater" that Gunn and Conner fight in a graveyard. They try to use the creature's skull for a ritual to restore Angel's soul but it fails. I'm wondering if perhaps this new villain might be of the same species? Could be a neat bit of continuity.
Do you consider the "Fallen Angel: Reborn" miniseries to be part of Angel's continuity? It was a fun read and I wouldn't mind if it is or isn't part of continuity, just curious. I know crossovers sometimes aren't in continuity. Illyria's back-story was pretty cool though.
Speaking of crossovers, can you tell us about this "Infestation" thing I've seen mentioned a couple of times? My understanding is that it's some kind of inter-company crossover but I'm not sure how that would work given that IDW has licenses for all kinds of very different properties. |

Heya, Vamp.
1) The numbering thing with the hardcovers is actually not a decision I make. While I work on the collected editions, I honestly can't remember what the reasoning was there. Possibly that it was far enough out from AtF that the tpb's should be re-numbered. I believe we'll continue forward, though. No re-numbering again.
2)It may end up being collected, it's kind of a matter of finding other one-shots to fit it with. On its own it's not enough to collect.
3)We've dialed back on the extra material in our collected editions so that's why there wasn't a cover gallery. I really like them too. So I'm hoping we can maybe do a covers collection or make room in one of the upcoming tpbs.
4) Yep, she was. And yes, that was a bit of a throwback to the show, although not really the same species. Probably a kissing cousin. I figure there must be like an entire subset of demons who eat souls.
5) Infestation is a very cool crossover idea that will not actually be effecting Angel at all. It will influence some of our other licenses, which the different licensors have been very enthusiastic about letting us use. However, Angel doesn't really fit into it in terms of tone so it'll be left alone. |

Hi, Mariah. I have a very general question regarding the availability of trade paperbacks. I'm one of those dreaded "wait for the trade" individuals and am anxiously anticipating further non-hardcover copies of Angel's series. However, only the first two have been released as paperback. Any chance of seeing subsequent ones coming out in paperback form?
I actually asked Chris Ryall about this and he said that IDW has a standard one year wait on hardcovers. But, haven't Volumes 3 and 4 been out for well over a year?
Thanks. I would ask more pertinent questions but I'm very far behind on the series. Can't wait to see what happens! |

Hi, General.
I don't think HC's 3 and 4 have been out that long, actually. And it's not exact. We have to consider what previous tpb's are out, demand, etc. I know they're in the works, though I don't know off the top of my head where they're scheduled for. Likely the Spring. |

Hi Mariah!
Couple of questions:)
1- Now that you have taken over writing duties on Angel, will that effect your duties as editor? Will you still edit the books or will someone else need to co-edit?
2- How are you and David working out who-writes-what? Do you both break it down and delegate scenes?
3- a 'possibly impossible to answer question'; now that Whedon is giving script notes on some of the Spike series, has there been any request or attempt to have him take more of a role in Angel?? Even if he just read scripts some of those "canon obsessed" fans would be pacified. There are those of us who love Angel for Angel; but a lot need Joss' input.I know this might be a hard one to answer so if you need to say 'no comment' I understand! |

1) Not a whole lot, actually. David and I edit each other and I'm pretty good at self-editing. But we will have another reader on all the issues, too, because everyone needs an objective 3rd party.
2) It depends. Sometimes one of us will really want to write a particular scene. Sometimes it's more of a back and forth. Usually we break down the script together, decide on the pacing, and then do a first plot draft. When that looks good we do a first dialog pass, 2nd, and usually a 3rd. And it all gets re-read at the end, too, since you really can't tell how a comic will ultimately read until the words and pics are together.
3) Sadly, it's a no comment on that. :} |

I suppose I'll be the one to do it and ask.In the new Buffy Season 8:Riley One-Shot at the end of the issue,Buffy editor,Scott Allie had a big column about Dark Horse's Whedoneverse books. The last paragraph had this announcement
| Quote: | What's next for the Whedon clan ad Dark Horse? How about a Dollhouse comic written by Jed and Maurissa, who wrote key episodes of the show.and the return of the Angel series to Dark Horse in late 2011,in tandem with our Buffy Season 9 relaunch?I can't wait to hold these comics in my hands.
Scott Allie |
So I have to ask. What does all this mean?
1)Is Dark Horse getting the rights back to Angel?
2)What does this mean for IDW's Angel monthly and Spike monthly and other character or flashback miniseries?
3)Is this why you couldn't really talk about linking the Angel monthly to Buffy like the Spike monthly is being done?
If you can't answer any of this,I understand. But I figure that it can't hurt to ask.Whatever happens though,I have enjoyed IDW's run with the Buffyverse. |

1). Ryall has previously hinted on a SPIKE: Premiere Edition. How far away is such a project from happening?
I'm kind of guessing it depends on the sale of AtF: Premiere Edition.
2). AtF: PE comes with a "Vol 1" on the cover and on the spine.
Any plans for further releases in this format, if the sales are good (I've bought it)? If so, may I come with a suggestion?
Don't forget the marvelous historic mini series by Urru and Byrne. Their artwork would really shine in a big format.
My choise for a Vol 2 would therefore be: Barbary Coast, everything by Byrne and Angel #23 -27.
3). Are Jenny Frison and Elena Casagrande working on new IDW-projects, beyond Angel?
Just curious, since I've enjoyed their art and seing their names attached to a title would make me consider buying it.
And sorry for ressurecting such an old thread. |

Whoops, missed this!
1. & 2 Yep, we're definitely considering it and other Premiere's. If we do a Spike one it won't be for awhile, but, we've definitely discussed it.
3. Yep! Jenny is working on a few other projects that haven't been announced yet and she's done some True Blood covers as well. Elena has been doing some great Marvel work but we hope to get her back on something here as soon as we can. She's doing a story in the Yearbook with Tipton so there's at least one more Elena drawn story to go. :} |

This was previously asked in August; however, as there have been no updates as far as I'm aware, are there any further develpments concerning plans to release the rest of the Angel series in paperback format? Like GeneralBlue before me, I'm hoping to collect the series in paperback and would be ready and willing to hand over my money the moment available. (For reference, Volume 3's hardcover is listed on Amazon as having released almost exactly two years ago, well beyond the standard one-year mentioned in GB's post.)

Hey, Maria!
First of all, I want to reiterate how much I enjoyed your "Illyria" mini and to thank you for answering our questions.
I'll be very grateful if you could answer a couple of questions in connection to yesterday's Scott Allie Q&As.
According to Scott Allie, after Spike #7 any further information about the curcumstances of Buffy finding that Spike is alive is unnecessary (the word "unnecessary" was used by a fan; Allie's reply was curt "yes" without further comments). The full text is here: it's Q/A #50
http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?t=8774&start=420
In connection to that new tidbit, I'd like to know:
Has Scott Allie ever discussed that particular scene in "Spike #7" (Buffy finds out that Spike is alive) with any member of IDW stuff?
If the answer is "yes", does Scott Allie know enough about that scene in #7 to make any assumptions on it?
Thank you very much! _________________
