Jim - I have a question for ya, will we see all the entire cast's transformation sequences - or just the main cast? Will we see their Cybertronian modes also? I'm also very interested in seeing backgrounds and buildings, any chance of this? And one more thing - will we see the concept stages from idea to final character? Oh, oh - also, any pics of characters and alt modes that didn't make the cut?

Hey there, Kurisama! Some answers:
1: Mostly just the main cast. Believe it or not, most characters used photos of toy prototypes for transformation reference, and Hasbro understandably doesn't like those getting out. When I had drawings, I tried to use them.
2: Cybertronian modes are present for every character who has one.
3: Backgrounds and buildings, check and check.
4: There are about four pages of early concept design sketches, plus a few more VERY early images from Transformers: Hero. There is more for the Autobots than the Decepticons, but ultimately there wasn't a lot of that kind of material.
5: Unused characters? No, nothing like that. I've seen a bit of material like what you're describing in Derrick Wyatt's personal sketchbooks, he might let me scan some in if we get to do a second book.
BTW, you do some awesome artwork over on your deviantart page. _________________ -Jim S

I can understand that - very cool all the same.

YEAH!!!! That makes at least ONE very happy fan boy.

Most excellent! You should see me doing a Bill & Ted style air guitar riff right now.

I'll take anything I can get - I love concept sketches and seeing the idea's progress and form. My fave art books are the ones filled with black and white concept art.

Cool! Yeah I've seen some of them on Derrick's site, very naice!

BUY THIS BOOK.
That's...that's the only thing I can say.
An expansive look at the first two seasons, complete with virtually every animation model in color, every episode and comic summarized, and much, much more.
And it's all in-canon. Virtually every entry is given by a character in the show as if it were a mission report or character assessment. And written WELL to boot.
As in, entries by Sentinel Prime, Grimlock, and virtually any of the Starscream clones are hilariously entertaining to read.
My favorite had to be Sentinel Prime's recounting of the "Return of the Headmaster" episode.
"And then Optimus ripped off my arm. Let me repeat. HE. RIPPED. OFF. MY. ARM."
And damn, the fanwank. Every page is dripping with Transformers references from ALL walks of the franchise. One entry is actually done by Vector Prime, looking in on the Animated universe!
The name of Lockdown's ship is the Death's Head.
And the name of the Elite Guard flagship is the Steelhaven.
For $19.99 US, you can't NOT justify buying this if you are any fan of Animated all.
Epic succeed. _________________ Everything is okay to print.

I concur, heavily.
This shall go down as one of the greatest pieces of Transformers reference ever produced. Well done guys, worth every penny and then some!
If I were to offer some constructive crits, I would suggest the avoidance of sans-serif and novelty fonts for the larger blocks of text. I found the introductions and some of the longer-winded profiles to be a bit tricky to wrap me eyebulbs around.
Other than that, there wasn't nearly enough Jazz stuff in there. ;P
Seriously though, I'd say this book is a definite high point for IDW's TF output this year. Please, please, please do a volume two! And I don't care if Derrick doesn't like Beachcomber, you give that little bugger an entry. _________________

I don't think the "Buy this book" was strong enough.

I got the book as part of my haul today, but decided to put it aside with the rest of the stuff I couldn't afford to buy. On my way to work, I had a change of heart and decided to get it after all.
I am so glad I changed my mind. _________________ Everything I say is OK To Print. |
