OH MY GOSH!!!! This is one of the best written "limelight"(spotlight) pieces i've read, and I guess it's classed fan-fiction. This needs to be published!!!

This should have been a published Spotlight. Simply Brilliant. Thanks Repugnus & co... Cool

IDW, publish this for crying out loud.

Wow, thanks! You know, I've been trying for ages to pin down Denton so I can pitch him a few ideas, but he's a busy guy (which isn't a complaint, 'cause I've got nothing but respect and appreciation for all the time and hard work he puts into IDW's TF comics). In fact, this whole thing started as an idea I came up with about a year ago that I wanted to submit to IDW, but since I had a hard time finding an opportune moment to pitch it to Denton or Ryall whenever I'd see them at conventions, I figured there was no sense in letting the story go to waste, and so I might as well produce it myself.

I've got several more ideas for spotlight-esque stories I'd like to tell, but getting this book printed killed me financially, and so I highly doubt I'd be able to afford doing something like this again in the forseeable future. But then again, if I can ever manage to get that chance to pitch my other ideas to Denton and/or Ryall...

this is an engaging (taking me away from work) comic that turned a character I knew a little about but cared even less into a classic Decepticon that I want to see more of

That was some good use of many un-used characters. Heck, you have even made the Firecons interesting! I used to have Darkwing and Dreadwind 20 years ago but this is the first time I wish I still had them.

Thanks! Since this originally started out as something I wanted to pitch to IDW (but never got the chance to), I specifically wanted to use B and C-List characters, the idea being that, since I had no idea what IDW had planned for their storylines, I could easy play around with these obscure guys, and then put them back in the toybox when I was done without much risk of contradicting anything Shane or Simon were planning on doing.

Plus, I have a major soft spot for many lesser known 'bots and 'cons, and I always enjoy the challenge of trying to get readers to put an emotional investment into characters that they may not have cared about previously.

The Marvel UK comics in particular always made Dreadwind and Darkwing into one of the all-time classic TF double-acts, a couple of 'any dirty job' bots who just couldn't catch a break (a favourite of mine being the issue where they drown their sorrows and get so inebriated that they don't even notice the bar-fight which practically levels the building around them).
This Limelight I felt very much harkened back to those days and stories; no greater scheme, no laying the foundations which may build into something senses-shattering, just two bots with a genuinely enjoyable relationship going about their lives and never lucking out.
Coincidentally (perhaps?), Needlenose and Spinister shared a similar status in the Marvel UK comics. It was nice to see these losers all meeting up for the first time ever, and I can totally see another Limelight starring one of those two which also includes the moment in the bar as a kind of Frank Miller/Sin City-style touchpoint.

And in all honesty, the only Spotlight I can say I enjoyed more than this is Wheelie.

Hey, all! Just a heads up, I discovered that page 18 somehow got deleted from my imageshack account, so I went ahead and reuploaded it and updated the link in my earlier post. Hopefully it should work now!

Sorry for not responding to your post earlier, Urzu Seven. Thank you for your comments! Funny you should mention that particular issue, because way back when this project was in its early stages, I sent scans of a few pages of that story to Mike to be used as references for the Maccadam and his bar.

I'm a huge fan of Simon's take on Darkwing and Dreadwind, and so that definitely influenced me when writing this comic. For the record, another great moment that I feel really epitomizes what these two are all about happened back in US #77/UK #325, when D & D miraculously survive Unicron's apocalyptic attack on Cybertron, only to have a large Autobot insignia fall off a building and crush Dreadwind. Priceless!

I'm glad you liked that, because that's exactly the feel I was going for. I didn't want any macguffins, "chosen one" prophecies, or anything else that writers sometimes fall back on to try and give stories weight. I simply wanted to explore the relationships between these characters and show that such an approach can be just as engaging as yet another epic battle where the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.

It was no coincidence. I chose to use Needlenose and Spinister very deliberately.

Man, this thing still rocks. And how cool is it that Simon Furman digs it!

Heh, thanks! Though I gotta admit, part of me -- the self-critical, neurotic part, I imagine -- wonders if he only said that 'cause I was sitting right there. But then another part of me thinks to myself, "Who cares? Simon Furman read my comic! That's so cool!" Total fanboy glee right there.

I'm not one for all the backslapping that goes on on these forums, so you know when I say this it really means something.

This story was excellent, as was the art (I don't like multi-eyed things as I have a phobia of them but that aside...) and this was an incredibly professional effort.

I'd buy it if it were released and it'd be nice to see this bolted on to the next volume of Spotlights, if there ever is another one.

I know I'm kind of attempting to resurrect an old thread by doing this and that I haven't been around this forum much recently, but I just wanted to share something really fun with anyone who may have read this comic. Last week, as I was gearing up for Botcon, the folks over at the Old Oil House Roundtable Podcast sent me a message to let me know they wanted to do an entire episode discussing Limelight: Dreadwind. Not only that, but they even dramatized a couple of scenes from it for the opening and closing of the podcast as well! I mean, how cool is that?

Please be warned that it does contain some explicit language, so it might not be considered safe for work, but if you're okay with that, then you can listen to the full episode by visiting either of the two following links where you can download it for free as an mp3:

The Nerdsphere Network :: View topic - Roundtable EP26 - LIMELIGHT DREADWIND

THE OLD OILHOUSE :: View topic - EP26 - LIMELIGHT DREADWIND

So yeah, I was pretty excited about all this, and so I wanted to share.

This story was simply wonderful. The plot, the characters, the dialogue- all came together spectacularly. This one of the best tf stories I've ever read, professional or otherwise.
