For Chris Ryall:
-There are repeated references to taking the Transformers series and overal license in a new direction. How does this new direction differ from the current series and what was the rationale behind deciding that it was necessary?

For Shane McCarthy:
-There is a degree of concern as to the extent that All Hail Megatron will fit organically into the overall Transformers continuity. How much dialogue has there been between the creative team behind All Hail Megatron and Simon Furman to ensure that the series works within the much larger framework of the universe?

All good questions, I daresay.

These questions are going to go to Chris/Shane/Denton/whoever in the next few days, so now's a good time to write them down, and also bump any q's that you would also like to see answered.

Thank you. I too hope for some detailed answers. There's a whole lot of speculation going on right now, and not just about All Hail Megatron. Even folks that aren't as openly worried as, say, Best First or me are calling a lot of the future of the franchise into question. I think that this Q&A session would be a great opportunity for the powers that be to assuage our fears to clarify or at least clarify a lot of the vague marketing-isms that have been bandied about as of late.

There're a lot of other questions that I have regarding artistic direction (see the whole F15/F22 discussion), the future of Simon Furman's involvement as the creative lead, and sundry other things, but I'm sure others have brought up these inquires in the preceding pages, and I want to just focus on one good question for each gentleman in hopes of getting a quality response.

Smile

For what it's worth, it's really great that the people in charge of this franchise are willing to interact so directly with the fanbase in order to put out the best product that they can. IDW employs quality folks, and I feel very privileged to have had them shepherding the Transformers comics. They've put out a top-quality re-imagining of the mythos and proven to be remarkably receptive of comments from their consumers. Even before this Q&A session gets underway, I'd like to tip my had to the creative team at IDW for being such a class act.

For Ryall:

What has brought you the most satisfaction (or at least the biggest grin!) since IDW started their TF run?

I can help answer that. IDW trades have done exceptionally well in regular book stores.
IDW had two TF books in Bookscan's 2007 top 750 list, which is an amazing achievement. Sales were about 26000 copies each I think? On movie prequel trade, and the movie trade I think? as the other. Double the book's monthly single issue sales. Amazing. And that doesnt cover all bookstores, nor Diamond's sales. (So you can probably add on another 10k, just for North America)

*not an official IDW post, just a laymans analysis

#288 - 8463 copies - TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE - ORCI ROBERTO - IDW PUBLISHING - $17.99 - $152,249.37
#322 - 7987 copies - TRANSFORMERS MOVIE PREQUEL - FURMAN SIMON - IDW PUBLISHING - $19.99 - $159,660.13

However, the movie TPBs were an abbaration, as they had FAR wider distribution and (if only by osmosis) promotion than your average TPB. (Here, HMV - a DVD/music shop - had a significant number of movie & prequel TPBs. HMV doesn't *carry* TPBs...)

So is the 26,000 number accurate for movie trade sales or is the around 8,000 mark more realistic?

Either way that's a nice chunk of change to for IDW to be getting from TPB sales outside of comic stores. Any way some one could get us some figures for other trades besides the movie trades, and will Reign of Starscream trade be picked up by other stores besides comic stores?

Is there anyway we could get a final number on the movie TPB sales? Diamond's list has numbers of around 4-5k, the numbers above are around the 8k mark and KJ's saying sales in Bookscans top 750 list of around 25k. If that's a total of between 30-40k then the book has done extremely well with total sales of $600,00 to $800,000. Any chance this could be right?

And if that's right, Neuronutter's next question will be, 'where do we buy stock?' Wink

The 8000 is just Bookscan, which isn't all encompassing.

There's also Diamond's substantial sales to factor in.

I would add a good amount for the UK as well. HMV were heavily promoting the prequel and adaptation (as well as Optimash Prime and other pieces of merchandise) when the film came out last July.

KJ -- you kicked this off, you want to cull out the top questions kicking around on this board that have a plausible chance of getting meaningful answers?
