COVER ASSIGNMENT:

Set before the events of Infiltration, Hunter O’nion is following up on a lead he’s got on giant alien robots in San Francisco. Will he discover Powerglide and Seaspray’s secret? And if so, will he ever be the same again?

RULES:

- Hunter O’nion must be the focus of this cover, with Powerglide and Seaspray being “support” characters. You are free to choose which mode to display Powerglide and Seaspray in. The reader must also be able to identify the location, so use known landmarks of San Francisco. This story is set in the IDW-verse, so designs should suit this.

-Finished pictures are to be inked line-art and “ready for color.”

VOTING GUIDELINES:

- Does the cover meet assignment requirements?

- Is the appropriate focus given to the spotlight character?

- Does the cover make you interested in buying the book to find out what happens inside?

- Is the cover eye-catching?

Awesome work, everybody! Here are my thoughts on a few of these...

D.J. Bryant - Holy cow, check out that detail! Truly breathtaking stuff, man! My only question is, since this is supposed to be a cover, is there enough room at the top for the title of the comic? Other than that, it's spectacular.

Evan Gauntt - Awesome! It's a very dynamic composition, and I love the redesigns you gave to Powerglide and Seaspray!

Mike Ackerman - It's good, but I kinda hate to say that Hunter doesn't really look very much like himself. I think it's mainly because, for a scrawny computer nerd/conspiracy theorist, he's simply way too buff here.

Nam Nguyen - I love the facial expressions here. Hunter, the 'Bots, the animals, everyone has a great looking face! Very fun piece!

Sumit Sarkar - Nice use of humor here with the "The Girl Who Loved Powerglide" reference, though I think Seaspray peeing is a bit too low brow for my tastes, and Hunter looks a bit young (though, while the instructions said this takes place before Infiltration, I guess they didn't say exactly how long before, so maybe it's during his childhood).

Xavier Basa - Hunter looks fantastic here! You've obviously got a great sense of drawing human characters, and way to place him right upfront as the main focus of the piece!

Liew Kar Leong - Hey, another "The Girl Who Loved Powerglide" reference! Very cool.

As for where my vote goes, I'm torn between Evan Gauntt and Xavier Basa. But then again, I really like D.J. Bryant's too. Hmmm, this is gonna be a tough choice...

Ok, well DJ's by far is my favorite. It's one of the best art pieces I have seen here yet.

However, Evan's is more a of comic book cover. So I gave Evan my vote.

Some very interesting takes here. I like the styles used by D.J and Sumit. You could hang it on your wall.

Excellent work everyone!

Bryant - nice shading!!

Allard - Hunter is Samurai Jack!! Awesome xD

Gaunt - not sure about the it working as a cover, or about Hunter himself, but your re-designs of the Bots are the best.

Sarkar - probably my absolute favourite in this group, but I can't see this style on a cover for IDW's TF. Anyway your style here ROCKS. The "lubrication" and the girld who loved Powerglide" are really nice additions.

Kar Leong - beautiful, but it looks more like a manga splash-page (ej. Naruto machines and backgrounds) than an a TF cover (IMO!)

Well I'll vote for Mr. Sarkar anyway Wink Still looks the best.

Oh my GAWD. Although it took me nearly two hours and reconnecting or restarting the computer about six times, I finally got through all of the entries in this category and was able to say a little something about each. Since there are fewer categories this time 'round, I'm going to try to do this in all of them, connection permitting...

None of this is meant to offend. Just my observations and personal opinions. No biting, please? Laughing

BRAIN DONNELLY - It's a pretty amusing piece. Trolley surfing shall become the new car-surfing XD However, Hunter just looks a little too strange to me, almost like he's too old.

DJ BRYANT - Holy SMEG, that's a lot of detail and work put into that image O_O Only it feels more like a dramatic movie poster, to me, than a comic cover. This is just my opnion, of course, but it just seems like it's far too busy to be a comic cover; there's no one thing that would catch my eye first. It's absolutely breathtaking, but it just doesn't feel right as a cover.

ERIC ALLARD - Samurai Hunter XD Very slick, very clean, very cool. I'm just not sure if your style here is more approriate for IDW or Transformers: Animated...

EVAN GAUNTT - Love it XD Poor Hunter looks like he's about to wet himself, Powerglide and Seaspray look totally awesome, and as soon as I was able to load the full image, it made me laugh. Perhaps it's just a matter of personal style and tastes, but I REALLY like the way you draw.

JONATHON DAVIS - The style and design for the bots is very interesting, another that would be pretty cool for animation. However, this seems to be another that suffers from the involvement of squishies.

KEVIN ROSE - The detail on the background and the 'bots is EXCELLENT. However, and this is in no way meant to disrespect, it seems humans are not your strong point and the image suffers for it. The body looks alright, but the neck and head area just don't look quite right.

MATT ADAMS - Very cool scene. Hunter in peril and Seaspray below to catch him. I like the setting and the image of Powerglide in the camera is really cool, too. I guess my question would be, how the heck did Hunter get up there AND record Powerglide? Was he standing on top of one of the bridge's pillars and is knocked off or is falling from a plane or 'copter? Sick details on the camera and Powerglide's image, dude (the good kind of "sick" Razz )

MIKE ACKERMAN - Interesting setup, but (as stated by Repugnus) Hunter just doesn't look like a pre-Infiltration Hunter. Unless he was in a coma for a couple of years and lost that bit of buff to become the scrawny nerd we know. Also, the heavy outlining around the 'Bots and not around Hunter, his jetski, or the background is a little distracting. The background looks a bit rushed in comparison.

NAM NGUYEN - I don't know why, but to me this is adorable XD I love that Powerglide is shushing Seaspray like that. Background is pretty, 'Bots looks neat, Hunter looks dorky (yay!), all around a pretty nice piece of work Very Happy

SUMIT SARKAR - Definitely a different type of style, and lots of nice detailing. I love the "Girl Who Loved Powerglide" homage XD But I'm not sure how I feel about Seaspray lubricating in the bushes on the cover of a comic book. And what's that thingie that looks like it fell out of Hunter's mouth when his jaw dropped? At first glance, I thought it was a joint O_o It's a funny piece, gave me a shock giggle or two, but I'm not sure I'd buy it off the shelf.

XAVIER BASA - I LOVE how Hunter looks here. Maybe I'm a bit biased because that face style is similar to the type I usually employ, but he just looks really really cool and is totally front-and-center (literally and figuratively). Background looks nice, Seaspray looks nice. Powerglide's head looks a little odd to me, but I can't quite place why. *shrug* Overall, I really like it. It's simple and effective, to me.

LIEW KAR LEONG - I love the detail and design on the 'Bots; VERY cool. The nod to "Girl Who Loved Powerglide" made me giggle. I'm not as fond of the style for the humans. Although Hunter is in the foreground, most of the focus would still be on the 'Bots, in my mind, due to the work done on designing them. I just wouldn't buy the book for the story about the guy on the cover. I'd be more interested in just seeing the 'Bots.

In the end, I was torn between Evan and Xavier's. I don't know why, but I like the simplicity and style of both. Backgrounds are nice, bots look cool, linework is clean and uncomplicated (making it much easier on the colorist, I believe), and Hunter looks good on both.

Ultimately, I'd have to go with Gauntt. As much as I adore Xavier's style, Hunter just doesn't look like Hunter to me. Makes me sad I can't pick both or, hell, three or four.

Xavier still has my support, though. I really do think you've got a great sense of style. Very eye-catching. If I didn't know what Hunter looked like in previous issues, I'd snap this one up to see the cute guy featured inside XD

May end up coloring both of them at some point Very Happy

Wow! What a great set of entries.

I have voted SUMIT SARKAR - I like his uses of black, the cool workings in Seaspray's joints, the humour, and most importantly BOOBS. (Look at any Catwoman cover and you'll see why!)

D.J. BRYANT came close, but it doesn't look like he needs me help getting votes! A nice Art Adams style. One criticism might be that Powerglide's head would be behind the logo on the cover.
