I've recently removed myself from movie details & topics, have only been able to nab the first issue of the prequal comics, and haven't read a page of the novel(s) yet.

While too soon I'm sure, I figured I'd ask since I'm very much wondering if it's been touched on at all.

Or should this one just be chalked up officially as the new Vector Sigma, Matrix, etc?

It's the bringer of life/energy.

I reckon it was previously called Energon Cube, because the writers probably felt that was the next best thing to the Matrix, which due to the reckognition of the Keanu Reeves' movies couldn't be used.

What he said. Allspark's shaped like a cube because it spent the better part of its life being called 'The Energon Cube', and I guess the design just stuck. New name, same cube. 'Energon Cube' was originally John Rogers' idea, Orci and Kurtzman changed it after much fan uproar for them slapping the name of TF "food" onto the macguffin formerly known as the Matrix.

Allspark is actually a term coined in the BeastWars/Machines universe. It was seperate from Vector Sigma and the Matrix since the BeastWars/Machines era had those two existing as well. The Allspark in BeastMachines was more like Primus, t'was just called the Oracle most of the time.

I had heard that they wanted to stray away from calling it the "Matrix" to avoid associating it with the Matrix movies, even though it predates them.

Allspark is a fine substitute, though. They refered to the Matrix as the Allspark in BMac once or twice, didn't they?
