COVER ASSIGNMENT:

The cover you are to prepare is for the faux comic Spotlight: Pounce. Pounce 's robot form is to be the main focus of the cover, with his alt mode as an optional inclusion. Also, Warpath and Cyclonus, in either or both modes, must feature on the cover. The setting for the cover is a mountainous forest region on Earth.

RULES:

-Pictures must allow room for all title mastheads and logos which appear on IDW's comics

-Character designs must general fit G1/IDW traditions. If you're assigned a character that exists in several continuities, default to G1/IDW. War Within-style design alterations are acceptable as well. Just ensure the characters are blatantly recognizable

-Finished pictures are to be inked line-art and “ready for color.”

VOTING GUIDELINES:

- Does the cover meet assignment requirements?

- Is the appropriate focus given to the spotlight character?

- Does the cover make you interested in buying the book to find out what happens inside?

- Is the cover eye-catching?

I can't say no to slick minimalism. Lovely!

It was not entirely too difficult to vote but I just wish I could have got to see POUNCE'S Alt. Mode I really am a big fan of the old school Beast Formers.

I would have voted for the one of Pounce leaping from cyclonus however I can barely make out cyclonus in the background.

Kris, all the artwork I've seen from you has yet to do anything short of amaze me, and this is no exception. You've got my vote!

Hey everybody! Thanks to everyone who has voted for me (#1701) thus far. I appreciate it.

If I hadn't shamelessly voted for myself, I probably would've voted for Kris. I'm really digging that style.

I voted for Kris Smith here. Really great piece. Love the use of black in this one. Awesome.

I also though JJ Berger's piece was pretty strong. Nice inking and the trees are very well done. Nice composition.

Joel Cook did a very nice job, too. I like the inking style and dig the foreground elements. I might have liked to see a different take on Cyclonus to better fit with the piece overall. Still quite good.

There were others in this group on the right track too. Nice job, everyone!

Well let's face it, there's a REAL standout here. But I'll keep you in suspense.

First of all let's look at a problem here. This competition is really emphasising to me how little some fans understand the scope of TF. Things I know just casually are obviously a struggle for some fans, which is weird to me... but there you go. Not everyone's hardcore enough to create a website about background characters (Was THRILLED to see Straxus AND Impactor in this comp, BTW!)

Anyway... the thing here is... why are there several pieces where we can see Pounce's alt mode features? I understand that this is a limitation of the toy... but the CONCEPT of the clones is that you can't tell who they are in robot mode... they look identical until they transform. It's sad to see people being so toy-accurate that they forget concepts like this. It hurts Pounce a lot.

So who did I vote for? Well before I looked I joked to some friends online that I'd vote for whoever did Pounce riding Cyclonus or Pounce using his bayonets. Then I found a piece that featured (sort of) both! Pounce leaping out of Cyclonus at Warpath with his Bayonet-swords, AND he has no beast mode kibble!

Plus the piece LOOKS great. Well done to Kris SMith. One of my favourite covers in the entire competition. I can see you're going to be one of the people to beat in later rounds.

I looked at all of them.... I could tell it was Pounce...

Did anyone else have trouble recognizing him?

If anyone did, then you have some valid points.... if not, well then it's just an opinion.

While I like a lot of thes eas art, I think John Goldsack's is the best cover. It's a nice composition, it creates some tension around the character's situation, and it makes me want to see what happens next. the little mystery of who's holding that pistol helps, too.

Kris Smith's has a whole lot of style, but I don't have anythign to say aobut it that hasn't been said.

I like what I see, but I'd hope the background would be filled in with textures by a good colourist.

No. You misunderstand me. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between Pounce and Wingspan in robot mode. When you add cat features onto Pounce it makes it really obvious it's him and not Wingspan.

The features that SHOULD be different in robot mode are their special rub-stickers and their guns. By putting on the cat features you remain toy accurate, but not true to the clone concept.
