|
|
COVER ASSIGNMENT:
The cover you are to prepare is for the faux comic Spotlight: Perceptor. Perceptor 's robot form is to be the main focus of the cover, with his alt mode as an optional inclusion. Also, chase and Horri-bull, in either or both modes, must feature on the cover. The setting for the cover is an ocean coastline on Earth.
RULES:
-Pictures must allow room for all title mastheads and logos which appear on IDW's comics
-Character designs must general fit G1/IDW traditions. If you're assigned a character that exists in several continuities, default to G1/IDW. War Within-style design alterations are acceptable as well. Just ensure the characters are blatantly recognizable
-Finished pictures are to be inked line-art and “ready for color.”
VOTING GUIDELINES:
- Does the cover meet assignment requirements?
- Is the appropriate focus given to the spotlight character?
- Does the cover make you interested in buying the book to find out what happens inside?
- Is the cover eye-catching?
ENTRIES:
#1601 DAVE COSTA
#1602 GIANCARLO LIMA
#1603 STUART LINFIELD
#1604 DAVID MORGAN
#1605 THOMAS PATRICK
#1606 EDWARD SCOTT
#1607 JUDE SIMON
#1608 KURT WEBER
#1609 ROBIN WYNSMA

Nice stuff here!
I really like the energy in Giancarlo Lima and David Morgan's pieces...
and the clean lines of Stuart Linfield's.
Edward Scott's... bizarre and brilliant. Lovely bold treatment and it makes me laugh the more I look at it, especially Horri-bull's head for some reason.
Voted for Kurt Weber's in the end, it stands out as the most eye-catching cover I think
first vote cast! This is going to take a while! |

Nice pics, folks! And I love getting to see Chase (he's my four year old niece's favorite of all my TF's) even if he's just in the background in many of these. _________________

While I like the detail, composition and extreme menace of Horri-bull in Weber's piece, I'd have to go with Lima's because it makes it more obvious that this is focused Perceptor. Not to mention one has to be curious as to what it is blowing the poor 'bot to pieces. Or if he even survives. Ouch.
Special mention is Scott's piece. I would LOVE to see that colored- maybe turned into a poster or something. How absolutely awesome would that be? _________________ -ajremix

Had to be Edward Scott's piece. I have to admit that at this stage of the voting I'm burning out a bit on similar pieces.
His just REALLY stands out.

Time to figure out which cover I think best represents my favorite Transformer.
I had four that particularly caught my eye... which got narrowed down to two due to, admittedly, personal preference. Namely, Perceptor might be a scientist, but he still knows how to fight and doesn't panic often. So I was kind of partial to ones who showed his usual quiet composure.
It ended up as a tossup between Robin Wynsma and Kurt Weber, who had very similar setups: Perceptor taking the initiative to defend against Horri-Bull with Chase ready to offer backup. Ended up giving it to Weber, because I just liked the details in the art and Perceptor's design better. Especially liked the expression - worried, but not panicked - and the hand that seems to be telling Chase to stay back. The water effect and background are wonderful as well.
Honorable Mentions:
I like Thomas Patrick's style, but my eye was drawn too much to Horri-Bull in the back, and I was a bit more biased towards the ones showing Perceptor being more active. But it's still a good action piece; I especially liked the creepy arm sticking out of the water.
Giancarlo Lima's picture is some very lovely work, particularly the humans running away from the scene and the effect of whatever is hailing onto Perceptor. But... but... it's Perceptor getting smashed! On his own Spotlight cover!
Less personal biasedly - ironically, it just looks too finished on its own. I'm having trouble picturing how well you could color it. I would be willing to buy it as an alternate B&W style cover, though. |

Loving the retro. Interesting that two covers have basically the same idea, and how they approach the rendering differently. _________________

Kurt and Robin - So very similar and both so very good, but although I'm a fan of Sunbowverse-esque renderings that Robin's nods towards, I like Kurt's style - there's just a bit more expression and detail there. Good work both! _________________ *All my nonsense tapped out here is okay to print* |

Can see why Mr Weber's doing so well, but I had to go with Mr Scott. The most original Transformers art I've seen so far.. _________________

There were some amazing pieces in this group. But I, too, had to go with Mr. Scott's submission. Words cannot adequately describe how much this image has stuck with me over the last couple of days. I've been showing it to everyone I know. I would buy pretty much anything with this art on it: comics, shirts, posters, secondhand septic tanks, you name it! I absolutely love it! _________________ This is a signature! Is it not clever?

I too am going to have to vote for Edward Scott's. I had narrowed it down to Jude Simon's and Kurt Weber's pieces, but for some reason while I was trying to decide, I kept coming back to Scott's picture. I agree that they style is definately different from most of the stuff I've seen so far, I just wish it had a few more darker spaces. For instance, the shadow of the bottle and the lines on the ground. However, I'd love to see what colors would do with this. In the end, if Perceptor were human, you know he would chill most nights with a glass of wine while studying some formula or other, so I'm going to have to go with this one. _________________ _______________________________________
