|
|
COVER ASSIGNMENT:
The cover you are to prepare is for the faux comic Spotlight: Misfire. Misfire 's robot form is to be the main focus of the cover, with his alt mode as an optional inclusion. Also, Skyfall and Carnivac, in either or both modes, must feature on the cover. The setting for the cover is a desert region on Earth.
RULES:
-Pictures must allow room for all title mastheads and logos which appear on IDW's comics
-Character designs must general fit G1/IDW traditions. If you're assigned a character that exists in several continuities, default to G1/IDW. War Within-style design alterations are acceptable as well. Just ensure the characters are blatantly recognizable
-Finished pictures are to be inked line-art and “ready for color.”
VOTING GUIDELINES:
- Does the cover meet assignment requirements?
- Is the appropriate focus given to the spotlight character?
- Does the cover make you interested in buying the book to find out what happens inside?
- Is the cover eye-catching?
ENTRIES:
#1401 ERIC ALLARD
#1402 FREDRICK RICKY BRESKY
#1403 PHILL HAMILTON
#1404 ERIC MARIANO
#1405 FRANK MILKOVICH

Eric Allard: Greyscale pic? How's the colorist going to deal with that?
Erica Reis: I prefer my TF's looking like guys or robots, not too feminine. But your pic is very tasty, like marshmellows. I mean it's good drawing, but I hate the style. Sorry.
Frank Milkovich: Very Guido like. I like Guidi's work. But I don't like this piece. Wouldn't work for me as a cover.
Phill Hamilton: Very nice drawing. I like it! I like Carnivac, he's very Marvel UK.
Eric Mariano: I like the inks very much. Great pic, not just the winning cover.
Grant Smith: Bold and different! I like it alot! You're really good. Carnivac looks damn good! _________________

Well, to be frank Eric...
Sorry, couldn't resist! Richter, were you having a laugh when you put all these similarly named people together or what?!
Some good stuff here. Honourable nod to Grant Smith for trying something that's a little different, and kinda cool too.
But for me Mr. Milkovich just takes it - THat's like wow on the detail there man, and I like the composition and someone like Josh would colour that up something stonking I shouldn't wonder! Great job! _________________ *All my nonsense tapped out here is okay to print* |

Um, my name is Mis-spelled it's actually "FRANK O'ROURKE" sorry bro I'm just proud of my last name lol
It's an Irish thing.
And since my art is clearly unworthy in sheer comparison to the rest displayed lol I'm voting for FRANK MILKOVICH.
His line work and sheer amount of detail is really nicely done he deserves to win for this group. _________________ Check out all my best art on my DA Page.

Erica Reis- That composition rocks! And whatever- I don't think your robots look feminine at all. Unless there's breasts in there that I'm missing. _________________ http://www.mentacle.rusticeye.com |

Seeing as how this is my group i thought i'd start by posting here (although i have been voting all day... work is going to go doo-laaley at me if they check the web logs today).
I just had to vote for myself but if i wasn't in this group then FRANK MILKOVICH would have got it! His image is brilliant and would look great as a cover. I also like Erica Reis' piece even though i'm not sure entirely what is going on there! Some kind of mid air boogalooga or something!
I must say i cannot wait to see the next round of pictures after this, cos the bar has been raised and standards are high and i only expect things to get better next time!

Erica Reis's piece gets my vote here. Dynamic poses. Great angle. Excellent line quality. Even with a few minor things that could use some adjustments (angle on weapons in hands. No biggie), this is still the strongest piece of the group for me. Very nice work.
I also liked Frank Milkovich's very cool piece. Nice strong inking style. Good stuff.
Nice work from everyone here! _________________ http://timshinn73.deviantart.com/

Also LOL feminine huh. *peer* Well if it is I certainly didn't mean to! Nope, no hidden breasts. *amused*
Look at all those Eric's, no wonder I accidentally got called Eric in an email. Lulz.
Frank Milkovich your entry rocks my socks. |

There were some great pieces submitted here. In the end, though, I was compelled by the awesomeness to vote for Erica's submission. I have an office wall that needs that poster on it. _________________ This is a signature! Is it not clever?

I like him a lot! But poor little guy. Everyone seems intent on decapitating him in these pics. He never did no one no wrong.
Oh yeah, and my vote goes to Erica Reis! _________________

Wow. This is really disappointing. This came down to two or three images for me and that's because of one thing -- most of these images completely fail at Misfire. Misfire is one of the most interesting characters in TFdom... and honestly most of these appear to have been done without ANY knowledge of WHO he is.
Making Misfire a badass -- especially one who actually HITS something -- shows a clear lack of knowledge of the character. If I saw a cover with Misfire shooting someone and standing looking badass I definintely wouldn't buy that comic because I'd know that I would be getting a book that doesn't understand the character.
So where does that leave me?
Frank Ogrowdowski's piece is really neat. It captures the character well. It fails as a cover though because it doesn't engage the reader. Gaze is very important to a cover and the main character who is supposed to be the star isn't looking at us!
Eric Mariano's piece is very nice. A great spin on the idea of having two guys fighting in the foreground while someone watches by making the STAR the one watching. Great work there Eric. The style just doesn't capture me. Carnivac and Skyfall aren't very dynamic, for example.
Eric Allard's is definitely my favourite piece in terms of character for Misfire. But it doesn't have the punch you'd expect from a cover and the grayscale plays against it. It doesn't feel 'ready for colour'. Basically it feels like a great pinup, but not a perfect cover.
Phill Hamilliton's piece is great. I almost voted for this. It's a pure character piece, with a neat, original composition. Misfire looks great -- and the smirking Carnivac is just icing on the cake.
In the end he was just eeked out by Eric Spikes' piece. It's brilliant. I love Misfire's expression -- I love Carnivac's as well. It has a lot of punch too... and rather than making Misfire badass, Skyfall's corpse in the background just creates INTEREST. He's dead... why? How did this happen? what's going on. Great. Has to win.
--Jhiaxus
(Looking them over I might have over-reacted at first... there are a tonne that understand Misfire. I was just disappointed by how many completely failed with the character.) |

Awesome work guys and gals! I really love seeing other people's artistic interpretations, drawing styles, perspectives, themes, etc...
BTW - lots of Eric's and Erica's with amazing talent, lol.
Good luck to all - I had lots of fun doing the submission; hope another type of art contest happens soon. _________________ YOU WANT ALTERNATORS? HERE'S THE REAL DEAL...
