Anyone looking forward to the new Trek movie coming out next year? From what I've read, it'll be a prequel to original show.

I've gotta say, I'm not.

I see the story as one that doesn't need to be told. The relationship of Kirk and Spock for me has always been one that never needed a backstory to go with it because it was that good. And we've moved on from Kirk and Spock as well so I feel to go back that far is a mistake. I would have prefered either another TNG movie or the next Enterprise with a new crew.

Nothing against JJ Abrams, and all those who are looking forward to the movie, please enjoy it. But as a long term Trek fan, I never thought I'd say this, but I probably won't see this movie as it stands.

I have mixed feelings about it. New Trek movie is always welcome. But a prequell with a young Kirk and Spock that are not young Shatner and Nimoy is going to be very weird.

I heard it was going to be a reboot a la Casino Royale with Kirk taking command of the Enterprise.

Do you guys not get your latest news from Trekmovie.com? From the sound of their coverage it's going to be a prequel yes, but highly respectuful of what has already been done in Star Trek. I'm sure there will be differences to modernise it but they aren't rebooting like Bond or Battlestar Galactica.

The big hang-up I have with this movie is the recasting. I'm going to have a really tough time accepting anyone other than the original cast members as Kirk, Spock, etc. Leonard Nimoy will be in the movie, so I'll likely go see it just to see him as Spock again, but I honestly don't know how well the rest of the movie will work. It may be an awesome story, but if I see someone who isn't Shatner and I'm supposed to believe that he's Kirk, it may kill the whole thing.

Being a TOS fan let me say that I'm totally psyched for STAR TREK. Glad to see Nimoy will be back. (Disappointed Shatner won't be involved.) Zachary Quinto is a great choice for Spock and the young Anton Yelchin shows great promise as Chekov.

I may catch some flack for this but I'm glad to see the Rick Berman/Brannon Braga days of Star Trek are over.

I agree. I think they had some good stories in their time, but a fresh take on the franchise will be very healthy IMO.

Interesting thing the guy tells at Aintitcool.com, reminds me a bit of the ideas of the creator of B5 had for Star Trek.

I'm actually looking forward to see the new Movie, even the story around a young Kirk and a young Spock has been discussed before, last time as a story for Star Trek VI as I can remember

I know I'm looking forward to it far more than I am to Paramount's planned live action GI Joe film (while I appreciate GI Joe, I don't think the liberties taken will do credit to the Marvel series and their making GI Joe an INTERNATIONAL team?!?) .
Why? Its set in Kirk's era. OK, so the crew has been recast, but that's to be expected. There's no way we can reassemble the entire original crew together again with the passing of DeForest Kelley & James Doohan.
Still, Kirk -along with Archer's- era , for me, was the best time for Trek. TNG may be a Utopia, but it was too complacent & overly dependent of diplomacy to & conferences to resolve situations. Kirk took immediate action and lived with the consequences of what he did. Plus, from what I saw on the wikipedia, it'll involve a Klingons & Romulans. Of course, I hope to see cameos from Enterprise and perhaps we'll see Janice Rand 's character as part of the crew again. (They should've ditched Nurse Chapel & stuck to Rand)
ST XI has real potential to be a real action oriented film that should be equal the classic series. Can't wait to see it.
