I'm assuming we'll be reading the Special Missions, too, based on their publication timeline. _________________ Author of Mr. Smartass, available for Amazon's Kindle, iPad/iPhone, and other e-reader devices and apps. |

Yes, we'll be reading Special Missions in the marathon - I wouldn't have it any other way!
The week of #46-50 we'll read "SM#0" Best Defense (a bonus story in #50 that introduced the Special Missions concept) and following that we'll have some issues from the actual SM series to read each week for quite a while.
At first SM came out every other month so we'll have 2 or 3 additional issues to read each week. But later on it was promoted to a monthly - at that point in our marathon we'll be doing 10 issues a week _________________ 30 Years of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero! 1982 - 2012 |

Ok, back to business:
#36 was a good, solid issue from this era. Not really much else to say about it. Always loved the issues where there was action going on in several different fronts. It also makes the use of several artists per issue much more acceptable. It was nice seeing some of these early characters appear regularly in this era.
Surprisingly the SE body count doesn't go up in this issue despite appearances.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I really loved #37 as a kid, but it doesn't hold up as well these days, I'm afraid. Again this was one of the commercial-issues, so I can understand if it's not that easy writing a classic issue set in the circus. Oh well, always loved seeing new characters make their debut, and as this issue was only published in the last year of the comic in Finland, I had long been anticipating the debut of Flint and the Twins.
I love Flint's debut scene and first meeting with Lady Jaye. Flint's arrogance and over-the-top heroism combined with Jaye being less than impressed was a great take on the due, but they really would have deserved a lot more face-time early on to let things develop properly. They barely see each other in their first year, then we return to them in #53 and after that they're suddenly an item. Anyway, the Flint in this issue is how I like to envision the character. I'd like to have seen his personality rubbing some of the more serious Joes the wrong way before he'd carve his own spot on the team. A more in your face (not IDW-style, though) Flint would easilly make my top 10 Joe list.
In the meantime, I don't know really get what the thing with Footloose was supposed to be. That not everyone is cut out to be a Joe? He'd have been a much better Joe with some more respect and appearances. Yeah, his MO isn't the most exciting one, but I liked the look of the figure (But not so much the later comic version with the flowerpot on his head).
I'm also a big fan of Tomax and Xamot, mostly due to their CG-association. They're not very impressive here, but luckily Larry loses the telepathy angle and keeps the empathic pain thing to a minimum. They were a good addition to the Cobra hierarchy and could have used more face time.
I think this issue could have used Spirit instead of Gung-Ho, since he was part of the original Balloon Bear crew. Or better yet, ditch Blowtorch. That's not the proper way to sell toys!
The Ripcord/Candy affair isn't exactly the love story of the year. He doesn't even know her name and next thing we know she dumps him. And yet she's referred to as his girlfriend later? I think they could have used an issue or two more of development. |
