just wondering, who are the new idwverse transformers, just picked up spotlight revelations and i'm a bit confused on the characters, and time frame of the story

The characters are essentially the G1 lot, although IDW tends to use lots of obscure ones.

Revelation is the end result of a long story arc. Best start back at the beginning with Infiltration - that'll help you. There are colledted volumes for a very good price that start with volume 1 and have everything collected together in the right order. =]
