|
|
Greetings fellas,
Well, the March 2012 solicits are out and it is interesting to note that Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #13... is not listed! As many of you know, I tend to be an optimist, but it looks like KOM is finishing with #12. The solicit for #12 seems like the end of the story arc.

The evil twins are gone. Godzilla lies dormant. The monsters that roam the earth are wounded, battered, exhausted… if mankind has any chance of recovering from this disaster, now is the moment. But with the world in ruin and civilization in total disarray, can anything still be salvaged? The fate of humanity is determined in Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #12!

Also, it is a probably not a great coincidence that, excluding Godzilla himself, IDW has the license for 12 additional Toho monsters--all of which will have had their own variant cover with the publications of issue 12 (except Destroyah, and he got special Matt Frank treatment in Legends #1).
On top of that, Bobby was kind enough to give us a hint of what lies ahead, over in the Gangsters & Goliaths thread.

Hey Bobby, are there any plans for another mini-series after Godzilla Legends? |
Yes, indeed... and it may very well be my favorite project yet. (though that's subjective. I think in some people's minds Legends will be hard to beat). Too early to get into details though. As stated in that Toho Kingdom interview with me (that I think you posted here, ebirah?), there's going to be a big status quo shift, and it will be clear by the time Legends #5 hits. (though it doesn't have anything to do with Legends #5... just saying we'll have revealed news by then) |
So what do you guys think? What will it be? KOM on hiatus? A new "ongoing" maxi-series? Multiple new mini-series?
For reference, here is part of one of the Toho Kingdom interviews, courtesy of ebirahsmeg1:

Mirjahangir: What future story line plans do you have for Godzilla and the other kaiju and do you plan to have some of them having links with the movie series?
IDW: Our Godzilla comics will, by and large, be their own entity, separate from the films. That being said, you will continue to see some characters and references to classic Godzilla lore. 2012 will be a huge year for Godzilla comics, in every way building and improving on 2011. Legends in many ways will be our transition series between the two years. By the time Legends #5 hits the stands you should have an excellent idea of how different 2012 will be. Expect some big, substantial, exciting changes.
...
Mirjahangir: If Godzilla Legends proves successful enough, will you consider on doing a "Godzilla Legends vol.2"? Also, how do guys feel after more than 8 months with Godzilla? Do you consider his return to comics a success?
IDW: I'd love to do more Legends, so if you do enjoy the series... get the word out! The more sales, the better the chance we'll do a volume 2! There's no doubt that Godzilla has been a gigantic success for IDW. We had an incredible launch, and sales remain strong. That being said, I do see areas that we could improve. I think the mysterious plans I referenced earlier for 2012 will address a lot of those things! |

I literally jsut read the summary of issue #12 and thought "Hmm... Does this mean KOM is ending?!"
I'm kinda relieved that it could be ending! I was soo tired of wasting my money on a story that seemed to be getting worse every issue. But hopefully the conclusion will be pretty good. However, with the twins gone, I doubt KoM will actually continue. Plus, Legends is doing pretty well and from my understanding is more respected than KOM. Still, I'd hate to see the Big-G leave comic books once again. I think IDW should continue making Godzilla comics. They just need to find a good solid G-Story to keep it flowing and going issue after issue (like Marvel's and Dark Horses').
If IDW doesn't continue Godzilla comics in general, I will be upset. First I lost Iron Man 2.0, then Secret Avengers, and now Godzilla?! That will suck if it actually comes true.
So please IDW... You can quit KOM, just don't quit on making Godzilla comics at all! |

| I don't think you need worry on IDW not continuing with Godzilla comics. For a few reasons. Even last month KOM 9 was still their 5th biggest seller, not something you just throw away. A new Godzilla movie in the next few years means it's a cash cow if the movie is a hit. My guess would be they just want to do a restart of an ongoing series or feel the characters work better in the Mini series or one shot format. I always felt Dark Horse worked better as in these formats than they did in the ongoing. We haven't heared anything offically yet, just that something is in the wind. So we can't pre judge what is ahead. |

I don't think you need to worry too much. Looking at the sales of the comics, they've done well considering the competition. The big thing is what will happen in the long haul. Right now IMO, this along with the Media Blasters DVDs as well as the SH Monsterart figures should be used as to build up the interest and anticipation for the Toho/Legendary Pictures Godzilla (which IMO, is getting close to nearly do or die for the series as a whole).
Hopefully the next long term series will perhaps succeed while KOM had difficulty doing so with the result of it ending. _________________ I got no problem with anybody who jumps into a Starfury and rides fire! (Babylon 5) |

If true, then I say good riddance and it's time to start afresh and new. It's been proven that a Godzilla comic can indeed sell well...so imagine how well KOM would have sold if it had actually been halfway decent? Let's hope a new title takes KOM's place and finally delivers a decent, fun comic (ala G&G and G:Legends...even the recent issue #2, which wasn't that great, was still better than most of the crap we've seen from KOM)...
And please, do not allow Powell/Marsh and Dos Santos near a Godzilla comic *EVER AGAIN*.... |

Man i choked on my pop when I read the topic title of this I don't really mind if they end this series, just as long as they have a on going series after because although I do love legends and g and g a lot they only last 5 issues! So I hope future projects they have in mind will be longer and as good (or better) as Legends and G and G. _________________ "You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. This comes from over in the Legends #2 Reaction Thread...
| Kingoji wrote: |
In fact... if it's true that Kingdom of Monsters is ending, perhaps Legends is being reapplied into a single continuity (note: NOT story) which could act as a basis for a new ongoing series? Not that this series is now set up and that a future ongoing would be in the same format... more that the new ongoing sets itself up as existing within a world where monsters are common place, and these events are all simply historical notes. Were that the case, some of the human characters may very well turn up later.
/rabid speculation./ |
I don't think Legends will be reapplied into an IDW Kaiju Continuity. BUT! I think your next point could well serve IDW-- "the new ongoing sets itself up as existing within a world where monsters are common place"
Right! Well, it seems that Kingdom of Monsters has more monsters than it can handle on an issue to issue basis. What if Kingdom of Monsters spawns multiple Monster World miniseries, all "sharing the same universe", but following different monsters?
I would definitely buy a Hedorah mini or an Anguirus mini! ... ... or both! _________________ "It doesn't make sense... babies can't even vote!" |

It's not. In the letter pages, IDW said "they have many more stories to tell." Kingdom of Monsters is going nowhere. _________________ Pain Is Inevitable, Suffering Is Optional.

Then why does the story of #12 sound so "final" and that there is no #13 on their website solicitations?
Yes, IDW did say they have more stories to tell, but they might just apply those to a different series. |

Hey guys, check this out! It looks like IDW will be relaunching Transformers in 2012, not as one new relaunched series, but rather as TWO new series! ... maybe, just maybe there are similar plans for Godzilla?
| Quote: |
COMICS: IDW Announces Two New TRANSFORMERS Lines
IDW Publishing has issued a press release announcing the debut of two new Transformers series, Robots In Disguise and More Than Meets The Eyes. Both will follow the recently released Death Of Optimus Prime issue, and will launch in January.
PRESS RELEASE:
Launching in January, IDW Publishing is proud to offer TRANSFORMERS and comics fans everywhere two new ongoing TRANSFORMERS comics series-- TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE and TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE. Under license from Hasbro, the two interrelated series are a direct continuation of IDW’s CHAOS event and spring directly out of the special TRANSFORMERS: THE DEATH OF OPTIMUS PRIME issue releasing in comic stores and online on December 21st. Both series will appeal to existing TRANSFORMERS fans and new readers. Featuring two great stories under one TRANSFORMERS comic universe, each series offers never-before-seen action, new threats and new villains that both current readers and those new to the series will enjoy.
“The response to the TRANSFORMERS ongoing series has been phenomenal,” says IDW senior editor John Barber. “This relaunch is a chance to jump onboard for anybody who might have been missing out. We’ve got big stories planned, and there’s never been a better time to read TRANSFORMERS.”
Created as a stepping on point for both fans of super-heroic and science fiction comics, as well as fans of the TRANSFORMERS characters, TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE and TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE each explore the new status quo coming out of IDW’s CHAOS event including BUMBLEBEE’s new leadership position for all TRANSFORMERS. The war between AUTOBOT and DECEPTICON is over, and now the hard part begins. In the new world of CYBERTRON, there are only two choices: stay or go. |

Gentlemen, greetings and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It looks like 2012 will be a Happy New Year indeed for G-fans. On their Facebook page, IDW had posted a little more info about their plans for Godzilla in the New Year (emphasis added):
| Cory Barber wrote: |
I was wondering if you could confirm kingdom of monsters is truly ending with issue 12, as in cancelled, or is it merely on the back burner for now? From what I have seen in a few places including here in a previous post that seemed to confirm it all signs point to cancelled. Some of us in a Godzilla fan group would like a definitive yes it's over if possible. If so we are sad to see it go but excited for the future of the big G in your company's capable hands =)

The series is ending but not being back-burnered in any way! The sequel is coming in May with a new creative team, plus there are some big miniseries (wait, is that an oxymoron, "big mini"?) coming and more. Lots of G (and company) to come in 2012 and beyond! |

Wow, interesting. A sequel? I wonder if it'll be set years later or something. _________________ Pain Is Inevitable, Suffering Is Optional.

A sequel to the current story arc....Wow, what a *major* letdown. Just let this awful timeline/story arc die already and start afresh. I don't care who the "new crew" is....just start the story from scratch damn it.
Oh well, there's always the side mini series to look forward to I suppose. |
