I doubt it'd be Next Gen era Romulans, more post Dominion War ones who are scared of being "beaten" by the Federation who came out of the War the best.

I didn't have much faith in this film before, I just couldn't see other actors in the original crew's role, but ever since the leaked Spock photo, I am starting to have faith.
