What comes after Godzilla Ongoing #13?
Please tell me this isn't the end of IDW's Godzilla comics. |

There's still more G-goodness in 2013, so don't worry!

| Thanks, kaijukurt, that is indeed good news. Hopefully, this new series will not break the pattern of each new IDW series being better than the previous one. While I loved KINGDOM OF MONSTERS, I thought GANGSTERS AND GOLIATHS was even better, and ONGOING was even better than that. And just when I thought they couldn't possibly top that, they came out with THE HALF-CENTURY WAR. We sure have come a long way from the Marvel Godzilla comics of 1977-79. I hope at some point IDW will consider reprinting some of the Godzilla manga from Japan, though. |

Yeah, news of new series should hit with the next round of Previews in about 3-4 weeks, I think. _________________ "I've lost all the hamburgers." |

Oh cool, that's fun. My whole comment is just gone now.
Well damn. Anwyas, it just said I'm really excited about what comes after Godzilla II isn't another meandering filler sequel that gets curb-stomped by another unbelievably fantastic mini-series that doesn't get the elaboration it deserves while the 12/13 issue story doesn't really GO anywhere for a couple of issues.
Stuff like a Tokyo S.O.S. sequel about Biollante (Godzilla X Biollante, natch), a Showa continuation (after 1999 or maybe the late 70's with Gaira and Sanda?), Junior between GvD and being frozen, anything else that brings Gaira/Sanda/hopefully Dogora/any other Toho monster that hasn't crossed yet into the Godzilla series proper, literally anything with Biollante, Godzilla X Trypticon, finishing the stories of Legends 3 & 4 (AND YET ANOTHER ONE?), a Legends II with the Gigan origin story, etc. etc. etc.
I said it way more elaborately, but you get the idea. You big wig comic editors are probably pretty aware by now that wasting all this creative potential on a "sort of ok" 12 issue story while only doing short 5-issue bursts of stuff that makes the whole license worth it is, well, not the best decision. I fully expect things to get way more awesome in the future. It's just that... you've made the same poor decision twice now.
The last thing IDW's Godzilla needs is a "Godzilla III" 12 issue story alongside a Legends II where every single issue opens up an infinitely more interesting story with no conclusion for the foreseeable future.
I'm not really as pissy about it as this post would seem, I like Godzilla II as much as the next guy (for the love of god give the comics a NAME, who green-lighted this "GODZILLA" nonsense?), but I just had a pretty elaborate post disappear on me. I'm upset about THAT, not about a comic where the final issue is going to be Godzilla X Keizer Ghidorah 1-on-1. That's pretty cool, honestly. _________________ I've always said that./ |

Ah, one thing I've learned early on, since I tend to spend a fair amount of time and effort sometimes composing posts for forums: "Copy and paste, just in case". The knee-jerk reaction is just to hit "post" or "submit" as soon as you've decided you're satisfied with your composition, but check that impulse and copy the entire message first. In cases where you accidentally hit a wrong key, or the internet (or the forum's server) decides not to cooperate, you'll be glad you did. If the message fails to post correctly, you can then open a new blank reply and re-paste your entire post back in. It didn't take me long to see that whoever's server is hosting IDW's forums is especially problematic. Word to the wise. |

Bobby has touched on the idea on why they can't directly tackle movie plot points and continue where the movies left off. Doing so would create more red tape and legal dealings. I don't think IDW's contract allows for these kinds of dealings. |

None of IDW's various Godzilla series seem to take place in the same universe, nor do any of them seem to take place in any of the three main timelines depicted in the various films produced by Toho. Heck, for all I can tell, every ISSUE of Godzilla Legends seemed to take place in a different parallel universe. But I'm OK with that, as long as the individual stories are self-consistent. Specific details aside, the monsters themselves all seem to behave fairly true to their core versions as established by Toho. Past Godzilla series (Marvel and Dark Horse) never really seemed true to Godzilla as I see him, to say nothing of the fact that they occurred in universes inhabited by entirely different casts of kaiju that never rang true to me as capturing the feel of the types of creatures appearing in the Toho films. I'm pretty deliriously happy with the artwork on all the IDW series, considering what came before, and seeing the genuine Toho monsters is SUCH a huge part of what makes all these IDW series enjoyable to me. Asking for IDW's comics to adhere to the kind of obsessive continuity with the Godzilla films that Dark Horse's STAR WARS comics maintain with the other SW media productions is asking just a wee bit much I think, besides which, whatever film continuity (Showa, Heisei, Millenium) they decided to adhere to would alienate fans of the other two). Plus the logistics of coordinating with Toho and getting timely approvals would be a nightmare.
IDW really should try to get the King Kong license, though. |
