Greetings,
Has anyone here seen the Godzilla project that James Stokoe was working on? Any word on if IDW has contacted him for possible work on the upcoming series?
Here are a couple links that I found--
Brandon Graham's (KING CITY) blog, about a quarter of the way down:

Monster Island News:

I think he might have even mentioned it during an interview one time. Anyway, maybe something good will come of this yet! |

I just checked this out...No offense, but I didn't care for "World War G" at all. I hope we don't get something similar in the IDW comics...

No worries, it's not my comic. I believe James Stokoe is an industry professional, so I just thought it was interesting to see his take. When the preview pages were released last year, it was the first anyone had seen of Godzilla in comic form since the end of the Dark Horse stuff back in... ?1998?
I love Godzilla and I love comics. I love comics as a creative art form (as well as fun hobby time, etc, etc), so in that respect I don't really care if the artist draws Godzilla "just like the movies" or if they experiment. Stokoe's work is interesting, and I'm really curious to see how IDW's creative team handles Godzilla and the other Toho Monsters.
What is it that you didn't like about the World War G preview pages?
Oh, as for the upcoming IDW book, we may have a hint in some of Eric Powell's previous work. I believe in one of the earlier volumes of The Goon, the titular character turns into a giant monster to battle his foe. One is an analogue for Godzilla, the other for Kong. |

I don't like the design/look of Godzilla with the red demonic eyes...it just doesn't say "Godzilla" to me. He's attempting to make Godzilla look "Dark/evil" (I call it the "GMK" syndrome)...it looks more like an opponent Godzilla would face rather than the King of the Monsters himself.
While I don't care that much if artists have their own "take" on Godzilla (I won't throw a fit if he doesn't look 100% like he does in the films), this design just really turned me off. In my opinion, Godzilla is best portrayed as a force of nature, neither good nor evil... |

That makes sense to me. In fact, I agree about the GMK Syndrome--Godzilla was a bit too aggressive/malicious in that movie for my tastes.
While I immensely enjoy "Godzilla as Good Guy", I definitely agree with you that Godzilla is at his best as "Godzilla as Force of Nature". I think Marvel Comics did a nice job with him too, in that they portrayed him as an animal, a beast, reacting to his surroundings as such. |

Has there been any progress on the “Godzilla” front?
Stokoe:
“Godzilla” is kind of dead in the water. From what I've heard, no American publisher has the license for “Godzilla” because of the insane cost, and I'm fairly certain that no self respecting Japanese company would let a Westerner handle their national treasure after the incident in 1998. If I ruled the universe, I would take a year off and just make it an online fan comic, alas, I need to eat |

James Stokoe Developing World War G

Comic book creater Brandon Graham posted a couple of pages of a new Godzilla comic book called "World War G" on his blog recently.
Reportedly this new comic is presently being developed by James Stokoe.
"World War G" has not, as of yet, been picked up by any comic label. Reportedly Stokoe is just playing around with the idea of getting the project published at this point.
The last time I talked to Dark Horse Comics about a possible Godzilla comic book series to be developed by Todd Tennant, they told me that they still owned the rights from Toho. So if Stokoe ever plans to go forward with the project then he would have to deal with them.
Back when Todd and I were trying to pitch our idea to Dark Horse they had kind of a "lukewarm" response to the idea of publishing a new Godzilla series.
Maybe Stokoe will have better luck than Todd and I had? |

Godzilla isn't just a 'force of nature' anymore, he's truly a character. With that said, this World War G thing looks pretty awesome, I wonder if any other monsters were going to jump in. _________________ Pain Is Inevitable, Suffering Is Optional.

So is this why we dont have more Godzilla stuff in America? Because Toho being pricey on the license and still gun shy because of the '98 deal? |

| It could be an experiment gone wrong. Collecting DNA samples of Godzilla and combining it with DNA samples of a long dead monster, in the process somehow recreating it as a clone only not looking like Godzilla but has some physical features, same strength and the strength of the original monster. |

After the HCW? He's going back to work on his famous series "ORC STAIN" for a while. We might see him on a future IDW Godzilla project, though, from what I've heard. That would be epic! _________________ C L I C K . You know you want to...
