I agree it is a really nice cover. Someone posted the pencil version on the Panini Comics forum (Panini being the German publisher of the Buffy and Angel comics):

Apparently the cover was made for FedCon, the German convention in June this year where Franco Urru was a guest together with Nicholas Brendon (which probably explains why Xander is featured on the cover).

Two FedCon reports can be found here; they're in German but they have pics of Franco signing:

The second one ends with saying (my translation) "Franco Urru was at FedCon for the second time and he would like to return to Germany again, to please the Buffy and Angel fans. Maybe he will join the party again next year." Crying or Very sad

Now I'm sorry I didn't go, as Germany is basically "next door" to me...

Agreed that is sad hearing that.

I just visted Germany this past summer for two weeks(going to France this coming summer for two weeks).

WILLOW #3 Review

Willow glides deeper into her wants and needs in Part Three of Wonderland. The Jeff Parker and Christos Gage script gives it up for Willow. Brian Ching's art gives it up for Willow. This issue is an enchanting walk through the mystical realm that doesn't seem to offer any options besides hedonistic pleasure. That's not exactly such a bad idea for Willow. She has a new girlfriend, the reptile witch, Aluwyn, and an intoxicating playground to enjoy.

It is Willow's sidekick demon, Marrak, who needs to take on the role of nag. He is confident that hefs found some ancient relics that may very well solve Willowfs problem. But what problem is that? Oh, yeah, the whole reason she's there, to return magic to Earth. It seems no use getting through to this girl. Marrak can't do it alone. If there was ever any doubt, Willow needs Marrak.

This issue has some really beautiful scenes in it. You have the ocean, and cute and cuddly little octopi, just before a huge Cthulhu like monster spoils the mood. But, the prevailing theme in this issue is that Willow is really at odds with remaining the persistent do-gooder and just giving in to her new bond with Aluwyn. So, a good issue and a chance for us readers to bond more with the characters.

Willow #3 comes out January 2, 2013. Visit our friends at Dark Horse Comics

Buffy Season 9 makes controversal comics list.

http://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/26/showbiz/celebrity-news-gossip/spidey-700-controversy/index.html?hpt=en_c1

Quote:
But sex in comics can come bearing consequences—as an issue of Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series proved in February. Buffy, after discovering she’s pregnant, decides to get an abortion. “We wanted to court controversy,” admits Scott Allie, the editor in chief at Dark Horse Comics. “We were fed up with America’s glamorization of teenage pregnancy and wanted to do a story that explored the reasonable choice of terminating a pregnancy.” He says they anticipated the media headlines and even worked with their marketing department to encourage them, but “I don’t know that they really impact sales. Since it is a genuinely controversial issue, it probably costs us as many sales as it gets us.” In the end, Allie says, the issue sold well, but not in record numbers. “I think in order to do controversy in a way that would really boost sales, we’d have to try a little harder,” he says. “And that’s not a great reason to do it.”

I have my copy of Willow:Wonderland # 3.

I'll keep it brief.I liked the issue although thought it was a little slower than issues 1-2.The end of the issue does seems to be setting up some intersting stuff and I do see some parallels with Twilight as well as nods to Willow's magical addiction from season 6.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland #3

by Greg McElhatton, Reviewer

We've all seen this story before: main character gets sidetracked on a quest, offered up their heart's desire and decide to abandon their quest in favor of the new prize that was found. Eventually, they have to shake off their new discovery in search of the original quest, and life goes on. So with that in mind, I need to hand it to Jeff Parker, Christos Gage and Brian Ching. They may be serving that up in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland" #3, but in doing so they've created a situation that feels like the main character could actually and legitimately stick with instead of waving it farewell.

Parker and new co-writer Gage manage this in part because of how they write the relationship between Aluwyn and Willow. The pair of them relate to one another in such a comfortable way that this doesn't feel like the typical trap-disguised-as-honey plot. As Willow finds the strength of being in this mystical coven, it's a scenario where you can believe that Willow would decide to stay there for a while.

At the same time, Parker and Gage still offer up that kernel of doubt with the reminder that everyone else back on Earth is still counting on her to try and bring magic back to the world, even as we're learning how nearly impossible such a task is turning out to be. Even as it's hard to entirely trust Marrak, he ends up being the voice of reason. But still, Parker and Gage have made the idea of Willow staying put attractive enough that it makes you hope that perhaps when everything is over, she could still slide back over for an extended visit.

The one downside to this issue is that it feels like it's a little longer than it should be. By the time Marrak finally tries to bring reason into the picture, you almost want Willow to leave just so the pace will pick up again. I like Willow in the coven, but tranquility is a hard hook on which to hang a story for too long a time period. With that clearly coming to an end next month, all in all the pacing isn't too bad.

Ching's pencils are a little variable from one page to the next; in some panels Willow and company look very blocky and overly simplistic, while in others there's a much more expressive look given to them. It's a little frustrating, because I think that Ching is turning out some good pages, but I want them all to look that good. Still, if nothing else, when it comes to someone needing to draw an adorable little flying octopus, look no further than Ching. He's definitely your man.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland" is proving to be a fun little side story to the main two "Buffy" titles being published right now. Will it end in victory? That's actually part of what's keeping me reading; I feel like it could go anywhere from here. While there might be a touch of predictability to this one segment, it's to everyone's credit that the conclusion is still anyone's guess. That's a good thing.

The title of the final arc of Angel & Faith. Also the title of Buffy # 20 and other little bits from Christos Gage and Scott Allie.

@Christosgage Could you give us the title for A&F #21? Is this a standalone or part of an arc? 4-issue arc? Thanks, sir.

Christos Gage

@Christosgage
@SlayAliveForum @Allycat2407 Currently the final arc is titled "What You Want, Not What You Need" and it's 5 parts all by @rebekahisaacs .

So the final arc is five issues (#21 -#25}.And the title of the arc,"What You Want,Not What You Need" seems to be a play on Joss's mantra of giving the audiance what they need not what they want.

@SlayAliveForum #20? It is, but there's so much momentum at this point it's not AS standalone as we'd initially intended.

Scott Allie @ScottAllie 8m
@SlayAliveForum At first we thought of it as the issue where we do this _____, but we had to do a lot of other things to keep it all moving.

So issue 20 it titled,"The Watcher" and it's not a standalone as the attended

It's really cool that a Xander-centric issue will be called The Watcher. It makes me think back to the speech he gave Dawn in Season 7 and to the things Caleb said to him before he plucked his eye out. Really curious what he's going to do though. I can't wait.

I have Buffy #17,"Welcome To The Team Part II of IV."

First of all,I actually got and read my copy yesterday but was very tied up and couldn't post my thoughts until this morning.

First of all,I'm enjoying this arc much more than recent issues. It feels like there is some energy now which I felt has been missing from the Buffy side of season 9 most of the season.Plus the plot lines of this arc are much more interesting overall than it's been in ages IMO(The last interesting bit for me this season has been the robo Buffy twist due to it's more out there quality).

This issue does have problems but the plot is ramping up even if the execution is clunky.

My favorite part of the issue is all the Xander and Dawn/Xander stuff. That really raises the issue for me.While I don't want to lose Dawn, this really feels like payoff on the Xander and Dawn element this season.

On the Buffy and Illyria front(seeing them finally meet.I'm dying for a Buffy/Connor meeting next season),I liked the idea of it and the council(nice to see D'Hoffryn again) but think the scenes are a bit clunky.

If i remember,Joss was saving Illyria for himself to use in Buffy which is why Christos Gage couldn't use her in Angel & Faith. The irony is that Joss is too busy and ended up not being able to play with her himself but was still reserved for Buffy.I'm sure this was always the basic plot Joss was going to use her for in season 9 but i do wonder how different this issue and arc would be if Joss was writing it as I assume was the original plan(if he was saving Illyria for himself than I figure he was going to write this arc or co-write it).

How Koh is brought back in might nix the idea the idea in fandom that Illyria was the one who imprisoned him unless there is a twist coming where she reveals later on that she was the one who imprisoned him.At any rate,it seems Koh knows who/of Illyria and has great respect for her.

The return of Severin. This is one aspect of the season that I feel has been very clunky. He's supposed to be the big bad of the season with Simone but he's been absent since issue 4.Every season there has always felt like over shadowing threat of the big bad all season even if they aren't every episode(or in the comics arcs and one-offs).That hasn't been the case in my opinion this season.Severin and Simone too just haven't felt like a major threat to me and in Serverin's case,he's been gone most the season anyway.Over in Angel & Faith, the trio of Whistler and pearl & Nash have felt like a threat hanging over all season even when they weren't in the issues or arc.Same with Twilight last season. That I think has been absent on the Buffy side of season 9.

The cliffhanger resolve with Billy and Dowling wasn't much of a surprise.

So over all,I'm liking the plot lines of this arc more than recent Buffy issues but think the execution is off.

Spike # 5 preview pages.

EXCL PREVIEW: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike" #5

Courtesy of Dark Horse, CBR presents an exclusive preview of the final issue of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike," by Victor Gischler and Paul Lee. The series finale hits January 16!

Spike and his new demon companion are getting along really well . . . On Easter Island, the duo work to activate a remnant of magic to help get Nadia home. Spike has stars in his eyes, but the bugs are wary of Spike’s newest friend and their master’s overly relaxed attitude. Something seems off. He’s come out of his self-inflicted dark place a bit too swiftly . . .

Hmm,this says it's out the 16th(next week) but the 23rd was the date Scott Allie has been saying. So will we get this a week early?

I liked the Xander/Dawn stuff very much and that alone will be enough to keep me reading. I thought the Buffy and Illyria scenes were poor and rather dull.
The Spike preview makes issue 5 look a little lightweight. I like the bugs, but it seems to me that they take the balance out of the writing and swing the story into comedic territory, which isn't really my preferred reading material. I'd have preferred it really if Spike had found his raison d'etre fighting Zompires and getting more into the storyline in San Francisco helping out the cops than in a slightly wierd story that features bugs, a spaceship and a rather cliche and obvious glamorous bad girl.

Spike #5 isn't on Forbidden Planet's shipping list for next week, so I presume that CBR might have it wrong ?

I have my copy of Spike:A Dark Place # 5 of 5.

I'll keep it brief.I liked the miniseries as a whole.I thought Victor Gischler had Spike's voice down good and I liked Paul Lee's art.

With that said,IMO Spike seems to be in the same place he was more or less at the start of the mini and season 9.He's more comfortable with himself which is something but as others had said on the various forums, there wasn't much movement forward. It feels very abstract to me.

Maybe when he appears in Angel & Faith and returns to Buffy at the end of the season, this mini will have more payoff.

Other bits.I'm going to miss the bugs.I liked them but before the season started, the creative team said the bugs wouldn't be around very long so in the end they probably got a extension in their time with the mini and it isn't a surprise they would be exiting the story.I'm sorry to see Sebastian die but he got a heroic exit.

I didn't really get a apathetic vibe from Spike on his parting with the bugs and Sebastian's sacrifice myself as other have.

I'm glad Morgan is still around. She reminds a little of Gwen Raiden and I could see her popping up occasionally as Spike's sort of Catwoman. That's how I sort of saw Gwen with Angel.

Overall a decent read and a decent miniseries as a whole.

Shade of Pale wrote:

Like I said,I liked the miniseries but agree that Brian's Spike stories had more meat on them.
