Hello! I've been reading these forums for a bit and decided to finally join in the fun.

Here are the classic comic strips collections I've picked up so far.
Peanuts, Pogo, Popeye, Prince Valiant, Captain Easy, Krazy and Ignatz, Walt and Skeezix, IDW's Bringing Up Father, the first volume of Little Orphan Annie, Sunday Press' Little Nemo, Little Sammie Sneez and Forgotten Fantasy collections, Dennis the Menace, Barney Google(would love to have more Barney AND Snuffy Smith), Terry and the Pirates vol.1 and IDW's Flash Gordon. I had the complete Checker Flash's, but got rid of them when I heard of IDW's plans for Alex Raymond's classic strip.

Really looking forward to Society IS Nix, whichis the Follow up to Sunday Press' Forgotten Fantasy. I also want to pick up the Polly and Her Pals collections when I get some spare cash.

I would pick up the Archie reprints, but I don't feel classic DeCarlo looks good on slick paper.

I may pick up the Beetle Bailey and Hagar books from Titan.

We are truly in the golden age of classic comic strip reprints and I look forward to what else IDW, Fantagraphics, D&Q and so many other companies have to offer.

MR. A: Thanks for your thoughts on BARON BEAN; I've passed them on to Dean to insure he sees them.

MARV: Welcome in -- pull up a chair and be comfortable! Our strip-collection bookshelves look pretty similar. Not trying to twist your arm on the ARCHIE front, but I'll note [A] our two ARCHIE volumes ("our" meaning The Library of American Comics as opposed to IDW-prime) feature art not by Dan DeCarlo, but by Bob Montana (the original ARCHIE artist!) and [B] if you notice, we stay away from "slick" paper, if by "slick" you mean a shiny, coated stock. Waaaaay back in '07, when we were starting out with TERRY AND THE PIRATES Volume 1, some questioned our decision _not_ to go with a coated, shiny paper stock (it was all the rage at the time, as I recall). Neither Dean nor I like the way such paper fails to "catch the light" when one sits down to read at night -- the light from a reading lamp tends to glare off the page, obscure art or text, and make one juggle the book this way and that to maneuver around the "glare spot." By the time our TERRY V1 came out, folks were complimenting us on our choice of paper -- and we've done a pretty good job of avoiding coated stock ever since!

Of course, if by "slick" you meant, "anything better than typical old comic-book-pulp stock", well, errr-r-r-r, Never Mind ...! (ho-ho!)

Hoping everyone is well along in their Christmas shopping duties ...

And here's a good "2012-roundup" article by friend-of-LOAC David Allen: http://www.dailybulletin.com/ci_22105551/you-can-go-pogo-comic-strip-reprints

Meanwhile, I've been digging up some great info on Cliff Sterrett, writing away on text fior some nifty 2013 releases ...

Hey, Marv --

What Cliff Sterrett news would you like to hear? There'll be a POLLY AND HER PALS reprinting of the complete 1933 dailies as part of our new ESSENTIALS series next year, available right around the time the snow melts. It's great fun, believe me! We also plan to do another of the Champagne Edition Sunday collections, but that's a bit further down the line (takes time to gather and restore those Sunday pages, donchaknow).

Just in the last ten days I've been reading another POLLY daily run, which was also a delight. And I've been researching Cliff Sterrett off and on over the past year (check out the June 26th entry at http://www.libraryofamericancomics.com/blog/2012-06/ for just part of the work I've been doing in this vein). We've learned a lot about a guy about whom very little was thought to have been written, and we're still digging for more!

I've been a Sterrett fan since I first read about POLLY in NEMO magazine in the 1980s. The more I read his stuff, and the more I learn about him, the bigger a fan I become. So as long as I continue to be involved in LOAC, I'll be pushing for us to do new Sterrett releases -- and it's not a tough push, since Dean and Lorraine are fans, too!

Can we get a hint of any new reprint series we will see volumes of?

I'm still pretty new to Sterret's work, but I want as much as I can get. You can definitely count on me to purchase any Essential and Champagne books featuring his work.

I've started reading Baron Bean - I'm about half way through, and I'm really loving it.

The format is really nice, though a little awkward to read in bed, oh well!

Can't wait for more of them to hit the shelves.

What's the planned schedule with the Essentials line? The next two aren't listed on the site as upcoming books yet, but The Gumps is due in February, yeah? Will we continue to get an Essentials book every two months?

Would love to know what else is planned in that format!

GRYPH # 1 -- Here's a crossword-puzzle like clue to ponder for the future: "Brother to Chet ...?"

MARV: Glad to hear there's another Sterrett devotee in the boat with us! I think you'll enjoy those upcoming dailies; they cracked me up!

EJG: Sometimes life gets crazy and some things get out of sync, which is why all the announced ESSENTIALS aren't up on the website's "Upcoming" list yet. Getting the Toth book ready for the printer (while also keeping the regular books on track _and_ starting to squeeze in a long-awaited volume with the initials K.A.) has consumed a _lot_ of time, so the website hasn't had as complete/frequent an updating as normal. Only so many hands and so many hours in the day, alas!

GRYPH # 2: I just checked RIP Vol 2 on Amazon: "Only 7 left in stock" is what it said when I looked. But when they run out, Amazon will order more as long as the demand is there.

Now, off to tackle a Monday --

Was visiting the in-laws this weekend and went to a comic store in their area, and I came across Dick Tracy volume 9, the only one I was missing. I had to pay full price and yeah, I'm sure it'll be reprinted eventually; but considering what people are asking for it on eBay and Amazon these days, I was really happy with that find.

Any chance of seeing more Billy Debeck's work reprinted? I would love some more Barney Google or Barney and Snuffy. Maybe Debeck could be a candidate for the Essential line of books?

Cnwl.
Any chance KA might be King Aroo, and your crossword clue might be Chet Gould with Will Gould and Red Barry? If so that is good news.
I would also second Barney Google as a possible candidate for the essentials line.

And I know there is no way in heck of this ever happening, but it would be nice to see Drawn and Quarterly and LOAC to work together on Walt and Skeezix with D& Q focussing on the great depression years and IDW on the war years. I only say this because D&Q do a great job on their books but at the current rate those books are getting published, I'll have to live to a hundred to get all of King's works.
