Just saw Skyfall ( I understand its gonna be screened in the US on Nov. 9.) I hope a lot of IDW forum members are gonna watch it. Its great! Star Trek Nemesis' John Logan co wrote the story and script and its full of character moments. As you'll note from ads, there's a new Q, but 007 has a new partner who's not who you may expect. If you listen to the dialog and watch the film very well, there are lots of nods to the Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton James Bond eras, which is fine by me as Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton look the part of 007 as described by Ian Fleming in the original novels, and along with Daniel Craig, they take the role of James Bond seriously, no campy humor or jokes. There's one reference to the Roger Moore films and 2 to the Pierce Brosnan period, but you'll have to watch and listen carefully. If you've the James Bond films on Video or DVD/VCD, start reviewing. Smile
I'll post a review on Nov.10-12 so that it'll have screened in the US.

Just ONE Spoiler- There's gonna be a NEW M! About time, too!
I hope that the next James Bond film will also bring back Felix Leiter and Ernst Stavro Blofeld and SPECTRE!
Happy Anniversary, Mr. Bond!

I super excited about seeing it, too. The last one was a bit of a let down. And the main villain looked more like a used car salesman that sort of blended in with the background than a super villain. In my opinion, a Bond villain should be unique, charismatic with a touch of eccentricity.

Just got back- loved it. Excellent! Vintage Bond. Witty, pun-tastic and sharing the joke with the audience without getting too camp, and some suitably vigourous action. Would recommend.

It had better be be great!

I didn't like Quantum of Solace (it's one of my least favorite Bond films) when I can't tell where and who Bond is for first 10 minutes due to quick cuts and shaky camera crap in an attempt to out due Micheal Bay, combined with a weak plot and a forgettable villain and Bond girl it was a total letdown for one such as me that loved Casino Royal and thought Craig was one of the few actors who made Bond work for him in his first film (the others were Dalton and Bronson to certian a degree).

His second time I didn't find him as interesting or good some of it due to script and the direction. I was more impressed with Daniel Craig in the US version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo than I was with Quantum of Sloace.

I agree! Skyfall's one of the best written and produced James Bond films to date. Its a real treat seeing the emphasis on story and character over gadgets, gimmicks, and jokes.
Ever since Casino Royale, there has been a real effort to emhasize James Bond as a PERSON, not just as a Superspy, and Daniel Craig made him human.
Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig, IMHO are the best actors ever to play 007 and in Skyfall, while there are homages as its the 50th anniverasary of the franchise, it wasn't as overdone as seen in Die Another Day.
The homages are:
1)M writing Bond's Obituary: from You Only Live Twice.
2)Bond getting the Walther PPK and homing device is from Dr. No and Goldfinger. We even see the venerable Aston Martin DB5 in action again. Q even makes reference to Never Say Never Again (Were you expecting an exploding pen?)
3)MI-6 going underground, Moneypenny as a sniper, nods to Die Another Day.
4)Silva gunning for M -think Electra King from The World Is Not Enough.
5)oo7's palm encoded pistol: The signature rifle from License to Kill.
6)James Bond receiving a file from M noted For Your Eyes Only- a nod to that same film.
I really liked seeing the look into 007's past. Sean Connery was offered the role of Kincaid, but turned it down. Still, it was true to the real James Bond created by Ian Fleming.
And I liked the closing scene with the New M, Ms. Moneypenny and James Bond. Its a nod to the classic days. I hope the new film will be as character and story oriented.

Good film. Much better than the Bourne Legacy

I couldn't help but notice a few things

1.) The train coming through the ceiling and sliding along the floor --- Like the train in Batman Begins

2.) Silva wearing the police uniform ---- Like the joker in The Dark Knight

3.) The emphesis on Bond's parents death making him who he is today ---- Bruce Wayne

4.) The Aerial shot over shanghai ---- Couldn't help but picture Batman gliding past

Weird, maybe I just have Batman on the brain

Also, at the end, I was expecting Bond to step into M's office and to say "Where the bloody hell have you been" and for her to step out of the shadows.

Good one K.

So what do people think of the new M?

I was certainly impressed with the way he took a bullet for the old M during the court scene.

He then carried on fighting despite the injury.

Should certainly be interesting going forward

Ralph Fiennes is an excellent Shakespearean actor, and he'll make a fine M, providing he sticks around in the films. Hopefully he becomes as fond of the franchise as Judy Dench.

Well, Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace/Skyfall , the new Batman film trilogy and the re booted Star Trek film do have 2 things in common: Character oriented stories and stories that focus on the people first and foremost.
I really liked Skyfall. As for the new M...what's NOT to like? Ralph Fiennes is a great actor as seen in The English Patient and Quiz Show. As M, he helps bring the film series back full circle. As effective as Dame Judi Bench was as M (in the Raymond Benson 007 films, she's named Barbara Mawdsley), it just seems right that the head of MI-6 is a man.
Having 007 under a female supervisor is just different. Its like having a GI Joe film with Hawk, Duke and Snake Eyes taking orders from a female General.

Back to topic...I hope we'll also see Miss Moneypenny as an agent in the next film. Daniel Craig's under contract for at least 2 more 007 movies! YAHOO!

Well, I am whats been politely refered to as a 'Bond Freak'. I've seen all the movies and read all the books many times (FYI Devil May Care is a brilliant book, Carte Blanche isn't) and I went to see Skyfall at the weekend... It was alright. As an Old Bond movie it works very well, it just really doesn't work tonally next to Casino Royale or QoS.

What did I like? Q - The new Q works for me and was performed very well too. Craig as Bond is still as impressive as ever, yet whenever he runs it makes me laugh. The visuals were really eye catching in this, the silhouette fights etc and finally M. The Judi Dench M from the Brosnan Movies is clearly not the same character in the Craig Movies and she and Craig had a really good chemistry onscreen which really worked well in this film.

Now for what I didn't like.
Silva: I love villains, I really do and Javier Bardem is especially brilliant in No Country for Old Men for that reason. In this however I didn't care for him at all. A mix of Julian Assange, Joker from TDK and Trevelyan from Goldeneye just made him the most uninspired Bond villain i've seen since Dominic Greene. Le Chiffre being the sole outstanding villain for me of the Craig Movies so far.
The Cheese: The 'exploding pen' jibe, the old Aston Martin with Ejector seat etc all really bugged me as the new films didn't really include that til now.
The ending: As soon as I heard the 'Moneypenny' name drop my heart sank and the fact M's office looks so similar to Old Bond now you might as well have Craig take off a mask and be Roger Moore underneath.

Well, I liked the nod to the classic James Bond films with 007 going through the double doors to M's office. In fact, the scene where M hands him the film marked For Your Eyes Only was a nod to that same scene from the film of the same title.
I've read the original 14 James Bond novels and find them better than the movies, although, to be fair, From Russia With Love, Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and For Your Eyes Only, as well as Casino Royale were the most faithful to the books.
I also liked the newer novels by John Gardner (For Special Services and Win Lose of Die would make for a good film version, ditto Nobody Lives Forever and Icebreaker). The first 2 chapters of FSS could make a cool pre credit opener in the next 007 flick.
I liked Devil May Care, too. Scarlett (004) Papava should be considered in a film. I also liked Carte Blanche. I even worked up the nerve to Email Jeffrey Deaver and he Emailed me back! No lie! That was a thrill!
One thing I hope the new 007 film will add are the scenes where James Bond does M a favor. In Moonraker, M asked him to expose Hugo Drax as a card cheat. And in For Your Eyes Only, M had Bond hunt down the killers of Judy (Melina in the film) Havelock because her folks were M's personal friends.
As for cheese...well, I was half expecting Uma Thurman to show up in Skyfall with M quipping to 007: James, this is my Executive Assistant. Say hello to Mrs. Peel. Smile

Skyfall would have been brilliant as maybe Pierce Brosnan's last Bond movie instead of ..Die Another Day Rolling Eyes but I just wanted something akin to Casino Royale for the Craig Movies, which it really isn't.
