I have to say, that when I flipped through IDW's TMNT Adventures Vol. 1 TPB at a LCBS, I was throughly disappointed by the picture quality. The pages look like they were scanned in from a old copy of the comic, and they're so grainy, that for a moment I thought it was printed on poor paper stock when it isn't in reality. I really hope future volumes look better. It's bad enough that we have settle for getting 4 issues for $20, but the picture quality on this book just adds salt into that wound IMHO.

That's a bummer. I personally haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Could it just have been an isolated problem with a couple volumes? Here's hoping!

I'd have to check this out by myself to really decide, but it's troubling to hear someone say the reproduction is poor, assuming you've compared to the original comics and find the TPB to look worse.

I hate the reproduction quality on the first two Ultimate volumes and will refrain from buying any further unless the quality is stepped up. (I have to physically hold a copy of volume three before I can make a decision whether to buy it.) So yeah, I'm not happy so far with IDW's collections of the older material...

I actually compared Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 to the old Mirage TPBs, and the Ultimate Collection looked just as good for the most part. #13 was the only issue in the Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 that looked bad compared to the old TPB, everything else looked perfect.

And you want an idea of how the TMNTA TPB looks, check out the "Look Inside" option on its Amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Adventures/dp/1613772890/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1348528427&sr=1-1&keywords=ninja+turtles+adventures

Sadly, I think volume 2 suffers even more from whatever the process is. Some pages carry some heavy smudging from whatever was originally on the page opposite in the singles.
Doubt it's relevant, but the UK reprints back in the day never had any of those issues...

I really do want to stress that I am incredibly happy to see these comics being reprinted regardless. But it does sting a little that I remember them looking so much nicer...

I see what you mean it looks like a poor scan. I was never into TMNT adventures and no plans on buying any of them.

I think the UC are very well done and only $29 each from amazon is great. I have UC 1 & 2 and plan on buying 3 & 4.

I was there when a bunch of the older Mirage guys were looking at the third volume at Shell back artworks and they were having a field day talking about how bad a lot of the scans look. Especially disappointing is the cover of Issue 17

That's sad to hear. I was in a Barnes & Noble a few weeks back and was able to inspect Ultimate Volume 3 for myself and I wasn't impressed. I don't remember it being quite as bad as Volumes 1 and 2, but pretty crummy nonetheless. I'm guessing these are old scans given to IDW by Mirage; the first two volumes were definitely from the same source as the 2009 TPB, right down to issue #1's faded inks and tones and missing detail. It's just a shame that IDW didn't bother to give this stuff proper treatment by doing their own high quality scans and cleanup work; and if they did handle any of these scans, they gotta step up their game. I'm still baffled why they would do a prestigious oversized hardcover format for these issues but not put the quality touch where the quality most matters: the artwork.

Shame all or most of the original artwork has been sold and is all over the place, but what can ya do.

Y'know, I have a photocopy of a B&W comic that I scanned hi-res and passed to someone else to clean up and he got rid of all the paper grains while retaining the integrity of the artwork (no missing lines, no pixelation) and leveling the contrast nicely, and it looks amazing. It didn't take him very much effort either.

Just ran across Vol. 2 of the TMNT Adventures reprint. Same reproduction quality as the first one. Damn.
I'll still get these, but I hope the reproduction quality gets better in the future.

The quality and price of these books is utterly inexcusable. I DESPERATELY want to own a full TPB collection of this series, because I loved it as a kid, but I flat-out REFUSE to pay $20 for four issues when the classic reprint collections of Transformers and G.I. Joe have offered 10 to 13 issues for $20-$25. And to find out that the repro is so APPALLING - untouched scans when the TF and Joe collections have had full digital clean-up and restoration? What is IDW's EXCUSE for this? Absolutely shameful. A bigger stink needs to be made about this amazingly shoddy affair.

I agree as well. $20 for 4 issues is a little steep. I'd like to see the volumes 6 issues or more for the same price. I doubt this changes though. Which is a shame because we'll never see the best issues of this series because they occur at the end and with they way the volumes are priced I doubt the sales keep up.

Yeah, the size, price point, lack of bonuses and lack of image clean-up are a major detraction.

TMNT Adventures would be a great entry point for younger readers. I don't know why they aren't releasing them in the same kind of Omnibus format they're doing the Now! Real Ghostbusters reprints.

Those came right out of the gate in 10+ issue slabs and they're nice and affordable.

Maybe the TMNT license is just really, really expensive and IDW has to compensate somewhere.

I totally agree. The price and size of the collections are the main problem for me as I haven't seen these in person, but hearing about the poor reproduction quality is disappointing too. If these came out in Omnibus collections like other IDW franchises, I'd be very likely to buy them, especially if they cleaned up the scans and threw in some little bonuses. I loved the recent Creed Omnichronos that IDW put out.

I think TMNT Adventures is a missed opportunity for IDW to market these as inexpensive stories for younger readers that could be a gateway to the IDW series or the upcoming series based on the Nickelodeon TMNT. I remember the publishers of Bone doing special colorized, inexpensive TPBs for younger readers several years ago when I worked in a bookstore and it seemed popular at the time.
