Hey gang, on Monday afternoon I caught the season 3 double episode opener with my daughter and it was fantastic.
I can't get over the music and fun of this series. What did everyone else think? _________________ Twitter: @lukeabarnett

| I enjoyed it a lot! I was having some minor health problems that day so ponies are always a good way to make me feel better. I think my favorite moments were the worst fear door and Dash vs. Fluttershy. I'm always impressed with the use of color in the series, the team really flexed their color theory muscle on these episodes. |

While Sombra was definitely not an interesting villain, but was definitely not a bad one. He was definitely evil (he enslaved the entire Crystal Empire)!
Still, it feels like they could have done more with him and I have a feeling that they will as his horn shown flying away as he is destroyed.
My personal favorite scene would have to be when Rainbow Dash is trying to give away a flugelhorn.
Oh Pinkie, you never fail to make me laugh.
I can't wait for this week's episode! Lots more Pinkie and should be fantastic! _________________

| It was grand. People complain about Sombra but I can tell you he was more effective as a villain due to the scene of ponies in chains than any of the others as far as my niece was concerned! The Mane Six each had good spots, which was the weakness of the Wedding episodes to me. Fun times were had. |

| My corner of the universe seems to be trying to do a timeline and many seem convinced that Sombra and Luna were an item and he is responsible for her corruption. |

I think that this is an interesting view - whilst I thought Sombre was kinda meh, his effects were pretty realized in the flashbacks and in how the empire was returning. He had royally screwed up a whole empire.
The way they gave the Mane 6 their spots and wildly different scenes was great. I love the multi-part episodes, especially this story. _________________ Twitter: @lukeabarnett

It was an epic trip all the way through.
Really enjoyed the world building they did and the addition of dark magic to Twi's repertoire.
As for Sombra being less of an awesome villain, allow me to quote a quote... Quote-ception!
| Quote: | "He did nothing besides roar, scream and snarl, and he barely talked. He hardly showed any personality or clear motivations. He didn't actively plot against the heroes. And he didn't live past two episodes.
But did he really have to?
You see, King Sombra has more of what many MLP villains thus far lack: presence. It was his presence alone that made sure the Crystal Ponies remained miserable. It was his presence that kept them from remembering where the Crystal Heart was, or going to the one place it was hidden because they were too scared of him. Just by being there, Princess Cadance was left to suffer for days on end, even with her beloved Shining Armor by her side.
And even then, he still tried to make sure the heroes didn't have their way. He took away Shining Armor's powers, causing Princess Cadance to suffer even more. He left traps that those without the courage and wits to stand up to them could not pass. And even though he wasn't always physically present, his influence remained, and it left a very heavy impact on everyone who dared to stand against him. He also managed to do what no other villain on the show has done before: make Twilight swallow her own pride as a means to defeat him.
From everywhere he went to everywhere his name was merely mentioned, he caused nothing but pain and suffering. And not a single one of us knows why.
And yet there are those who have called him 'wasted potential,' just because he barely talked or took action, had no clear characterization, and didn't live up to any of our lofty expectations. But I'll be fair; even I expected him to be Sauron as he was before he was slain by Isildur, not Sauron as he appeared in the whole 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
Sometimes, less really is more. That is why he is, to me, a far greater villain than any of us could have ever anticipated."
He goes on to say:
"Now that I think about it, each of the major villains thus far represents a different 'element to writing a good villain' and, in a way, makes up for what the others lack in those regards:
Nightmare Moon: Good backstory, makes her more sympathetic.
Discord: Good personality, makes him more fun to watch.
Queen Chrysalis: Good motivation, makes her actions mesh better with the plot.
King Sombra: Good presence, makes his threat more apparent." |
After reading this, I tried watching the episodes again and found that my enjoyment of them was greatly increased. ;P _________________ "Have a reply. I hear they taste like chicken.

Watching Ep3 on YouTube right now. "Too many pinkies" further proof of Pinkie Pie's awesomeness! _________________ Twitter: @lukeabarnett

The Crystal Empire and Too Many Pinkie Pies were both very so-so for me. I found myself truly enjoying certain scenes, like Celestia's exchange with Luna and then Twilight, or some of the Pinkies' wackiest antics, but I was frankly disappointed by the overall episodes. I had to rewatch them with lower expectations. It helped but not so much.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the CMC.
Today's episode, on the other hand, I had to rewatch because of how good it was. Simple yet well done story. Memorable song. Hints of Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle finally gaining their flight and magic. Sisterly moments between Apple Bloom and Applejack. Applejack, period! Sweetie Belle's home (hello, Rarity's dad). An interesting new character. And plenty of jokes that actually flow with the narrative. |

| Today's episode was precious and was nice to have after working Black Friday in a mall. I'm never big on CMC episodes but I still enjoyed it. I liked that ridiculously catchy song quite a bit. |

Interesting... I thought this week's episode was pretty weak, while the first three episodes of this season were pretty good. _________________

| I put Too Many Pinkies and One Bad Apple on the same level. I think TMP had more comedic moments, One Bad Apple a stronger central story and moral. |

My reviews of the eps so far
1 & 2 The Crystal Empire
Pros
Did a good job on the expansion of the world & the lore, nice foreshadowing at the end with Lunas Book
-Glad Spike got a moment to be the Hero for once
Cons
-Like most 2-parters felt rushed, could have easily been a 3-parter IMO
3: Too Many Pinkie Pies
Pros
- Lots of funny moments with Pinkie
Cons
-Too Many Pinkie Pies XD
- Something about the Pinkicide at the end disturbs me *all those Pinkie Clones Popping, the horror, the horror!!!*
4. One Bad Apple. Honestly this is my FAVORITE EPISODE of Season 3 so far, I loved how the moral was Handled, I feared Babs would be a one dimensional character like DT & Spoon, but she wasn't, in the end her reasons for bullying the CMC were very believable once we find out why she left Manehatten. In the end she learned she doesn't have to be the victim or the bully, but can confine in her friends & family, and stand up to those that bully her! Also I'm glad they made her the 4th Member of the CMC, gives me hope we will see her again someday. *Seriously I think she's one of my new fav characters, such a cutie!* Infact..
Dear IDW, Katie Cook & Andy Price, Please put Babs Seed in a future issue of the comic. *or at the very least on a awesome variant cover* Seriously love the gal!
And thats all I have to say for now, looking forward to Trixie's return this weekend in "Magic Duel" seems like it'll be a pretty epic episode!
Also CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE COMIC TOMMOROW! WOOHOO!!!! _________________ Timelords, Sailors, & Ponies, OH MY! |
