I think this might be right on the money as to how he feels.
I wouldn't be surprised though, if girls who are all crazy about the Avengers movie shows up wearing a skin tight Black Window catsuits, saying how much they absolutely love The Avengers.... and has yet to pick up a single Marvel comic. Though I believe those cases are so rare that they are not even worth throwing a fit over.
He should be complaining about Halloween. There's a lot of girls sees that holiday as an excuse to show off dressing up as a slutty cat, or a slutty school girl, or a slutty devil or a slutty slut.
Still, how can he know that all of those pretty lookin' women are not hardcore comic fans without talking to them all before judging them?
This girl has stated she's obsessed with comics.
And this girl, along with the girl behind the brilliant Rewind costume are probably assumed to be male.
They probably won fair and square....

Do not worry, they are not that helpless.

Hahaha aww man wish my laptop didn't break. Typing this on a tablet is weird. I'll have to read through so,e of this, I assume many would say the portrayal of women in comics is somewhat similar to that of video games. Will chime in at a later date though, for sure. _________________ The biggest disability in life is a bad attitude. |

While reading up on the whole Tony Harris discussion and related topics, I ran into an interesting comment somewhere by... I'm not entirely sure, but I think it was by someone affiliated with the weblog The Mary Sue. Anyway, she said something to the point that these kind of things have led to some (or many) developing a zero-tolerance attitude towards sexism in the industry.
I think she's right. For one thing, I've become one of those people. It's gotten to the point where I'm just so fed up, both with creator's portrayal of women and fans' reactions when women stand up and criticise it that I'll speak up against any instance where I feel a female character is exploited with the express purpose to appeal to the male reader (and excluding the female reader in the process). It also influences my decision what I do and don't buy.
(An example is the magazine Cereal Geek, which I will no longer buy because of this: https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/405074_10151332232211057_598802940_n.jpg To put things in context, Cereal Geek is an (otherwise excellent) nostalgic magazine dedicated to eighties cartoons.)
So yeah, I've become a bit of an activist in having my voice heard and voting with my money and stuff. Because it's not just being sensitive about a single instance of sexist portrayal of women somewhere - it's being confronted with it on a consistent basis for years on end (in my case, I've been a comics fan for over twenty-three years, so go figure).
So that's me. I wonder how other people here feel about it? _________________

23 years? Wow, you must have a huge collection.
I haven't read that many comics, to be fair. Well, I did read a boatload during me preteen years. My favorites were Danger Girl, The Darkness, Witch and Elfquest.
J. Scott Campbell heavily influenced my art at the time. Resulting in a lot of big boobed and long legged women. The proportions were outrageous, and as far as my drawing skills went, the Campbell influence resulted in one step forward and two steps back...
I don't know if it is just me, but I was slightly offended by this practical we had where my teacher went on and on about how the lips HAD to be full, and the eyebrows HAD to be thin and the nose HAD to be small in order for a face to look like that of a woman.
We were supposed to copy this:
I sketched this:
He didn't care for it; her hair was too flat and she was too anime looking and not feminine enough. |

Her face reminds me a bit of Sarah Lund from The Killing. A fine example of an excellent female lead character. _________________

Tv shows has by far some of the best female characters: Like Debra Morgan in Dexter, Olivia Dunham in Fringe, Andrea and Michonne(OMG how badass is Michonne?!! In the comic too) in The Walking Dead, Carrie Mathesion in Homeland and also Peggy Olsen in Madmen. Peggy may not have that "badass" factor, but she's a go getter in a time were the only thing a girl was supposed to get was her a** into the kitchen.
Oh, and 13 and Chi Park from House.
Also, none of them are obligated to run around in silly little outfits, or pose daringly on the cover cater to the male demographic. |

Love that picture, RaggaeTron. Looking at it without the original text kind of makes me think that Red Alert would be all like, "Bro, do you even lift?"
Your teacher makes me angry. My art teachers were all feminist and that just wouldn't have went down.
The Walking Dead has some of the very few female characters that I actually enjoy. For a long time, I thought I just hated women. Then I realized that I just hate what women are expected to be. Too many female characters in movies are boring an are only there to be the boobs for the male lead. I have a hard time finding fictional females that I can relate to. |

Well it might if the female Ghostbuster outfits didn't seem to necessitate shorts and cleavage.
[Edit: ok, tolerable given the notice by the writer in the comments, I guess.] _________________

Yeah, it's still a bit questionable considering these covers apparently are for #1 and the shortage doesn't happen until #2. And as someone said in the Ghostbusters section:
| Swordmaster wrote: | I don't think I'm being unreasonable about the cover images when that's what's being solicited. If those are not the costumes, why would they be advertised? Of course, it's not the first time a cover does not give an idea of the interior content, but I would think the costumes do not fall under that category.
|
I do wonder whose call it was to put the Ghostbuster-gals-plus-shorts on the cover because yeah, it does feel like they are used this way to promote the book. But, y'know, points for trying and it's not over the top or anything.
I don't mind the cleavage very much because although they do seem to suffer from Universal Malfunctioning Zipper Syndrome, they are actually wearing something underneath their jackets which keeps the outfit within acceptable tasteful limits. You know, it gives it a feminine touch (nothing wrong with that) but doesn't give off the objectivating vibe that, say, Catwoman or Black Widow does.
Can you tell I've got this down to a science?
Anyways, I'm glad IDW's making an effort to have more lady-driven books and I've heard good things about Ghostbusters, so I'll be picking up the trade for this. _________________

I know exactly how you feel. No wonder my list of favourite male characters has 50-70 names on it while my list of favourite female characters only has ..... 4....
The gruesome Groke being #1.... Or was Xena number 1.... can't decide.
