|

This is a "help me decide" thread. I am interested in this idw ghostbusters comic, and saw that vol 1 and 2 are available in tbp format.
My questions about the series are below:
1. Does the stories play out like a case file of different ghosts and the team trying to learn about it and then capture it? Does each issue focus on a different type of ghost? If that explanation sound confusing think X-files.
2. Is there a little bit of a detective work theme in these issues or is the concept simply, here's a ghost, people hate it, capture it, the end?
3. Will there by a hardcover edition of these books in deluxe format like they did with the TMNT deluxe that just came out? I do hope if there is one that there are more than 4 issues in that edition.
I want to get this, but I would like to know why people are raving about it so much. So far, I gather that it is because of the references to the video game (which I never played), movies (awesome!), cartoon shows. If that is the main reason then it seems like it's all about nostalgia. I'm all for that, but it would be better to have a deep and somewhat serious story in an otherwise colorful ghostbusters.
Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks! |

The first arc, Volume 1 that is, is essentially Ghostbusters 4 (the videogame being 3). The continuity between all the issues is very strong, and it directly ties into the movies and the game. Just about any reference to the cartoon is done in Easter egg fashion, and it's fun trying to pick that stuff from the art.
Speaking of the art, it's pretty awesome. And the coloring is the best in any comic book out there, Delgado uses an awesome glowing effect for the ghosts and stuff.
The best thing about the book is how well written the main characters are. You can easily "hear" Billy Murray, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd in your head as you read. Characterizations are just spot on.
I could ramble on for a good while, but you should just go buy em! _________________ ------------------

I really don't think you'll be disappointed, dvader. Rest assured there is an actual well-written story in both of those books, and that the easter eggs are merely a fun bonus (and not the meat itself).
If it were nothing but nostalgia wank, I wouldn't be buying it either. The folks that work on these books are dedicated to their craft, and they all make the Ghostbusters franchise better off for it. |

Thank you. I am debating on which IDW ongoing series I want to get into first. I am deciding between
1. GI Joe
2. Ghostbusters
3. TMNT
4. Transformers
So far, I feel that Ghostbusters is the best one in terms of art and story. What do you think?
Also, I am hoping for a deluxe edition that puts two volumes into one hardcover. |

As a fresh new look at the franchise, TMNT is an awesome book.
As a continuation of the movie series and the video game, Ghostbusters is an awesome book.
Personally, I pick up both books each month the day they're released, so I'm not sure I could suggest one over the other.
With TMNT, there's a lot more going on. They have the monthly ongoing book, plus the micro-series issues (with the Splinter issue being written by Ghostbusters scribe Erik Burnham), the Infestation 2 books, an annual on the way and a couple of other things.
Ghostbusters just has the ongoing. But even though there's less material available each month, the story pacing is good enough to just have the main book (plus the PCOC files, concept art, and kid/fan art.)
So yeah, buy em both! _________________ ------------------

I've heard wonderful things about GB and I will probably pick up the TPBs if a deluxe HC doesn't come out. but i've been on TMNT since it dropped last year and i'm so in love. I'd definitely say going with TMNT is a good idea. But if you've got the cash, GB is surely worth getting into! _________________ The biggest disability in life is a bad attitude. |
