I think it's awesome.

I've gotten all 3 issues of the anthology so far and have enjoyed each one. I think IDW is doing Steven's Rocketeer justice. Would be curious about a full ongoing.

I've read the first issue and found it very uneven.
The first two stories were good but the last one was awful!!
I simply don't believe in Rocketeer as a kind of superhero/Captain America figure during WW2.
It just clashes completely with Dave Stevens' Rocketeer ( the way I read it anyway).
And the fact that it comes with beautiful art, by Kaluta, who assisted on the original series, can't salvage a horrible story.

No more Rocketeer Adventures for me...

I've pre-ordered the recent anthology collection after reading the first issue, and I've ordered the complete collection of the original Dave Stevens book. I would love for IDW to do more with the Rocketeer, like mini- or ongoing series.

ROCKETEER ADVENTURES is one of my favorite comics. It's just awesome, every issue.

Amazon sent me an email that my pre-ordered HC collection of The Rocketeer Adventures will ship November 17th. Amazon usually gets it's trades two weeks after comic book retailers, making the street date for this book November 2nd.

So I got The Rocketeer: The Complete Adventures hardcover and discovered something interesting. And by interesting I mean annoying and inconvenient.

My copy of the book does not include pages 81 through 96. Instead it prints pages 65 through 80 twice.

Is this an issue I should address with IDW or with Discount Comic Book Service that sold/shipped the book to me? Anybody have any ideas?

It amazes me that Dave Stevens: The Complete Sketchbook Collection is out of print, and has been for quite a while.
Shouldn't a book like that be kept in print forever, as a companion piece for The Rocketeer books?
A second artbook is coming this summer, Dave Stevens' Stories & Covers, so I hope IDW does a better job with the print run of that.

I just bought the basic version of the complete collection and love it! The coloring is amazing and the artwork is beautiful. I would love to get the other books like the sketchbooks in the future to add to my collection. IDW did something special by releasing this.

I do have a question however, has there ever been a companion book to the Rocketeer comics? I loved Cliff's New York Adventure but can't help but to be curious about some of the models Stevens used. We all know Rondo Hatton and Bettie Page were obvious models but were the stars of the carnival picked from films?

In one panel, someone is talking to Teena- is the person from the Tod Browning classic Freaks?

One that may be harder but that caught my notice immediately was also the clown. It's hard to say with certainty but to me, it looks like Stevens used Lon Chaney from his film, He-Who-Gets-Slapped. I am a HUGE Lon Chaney fan and instantly recognized the three hair sprigs and the little eye lines and would love to see if I'm right.

If anyone knows the history and details of the models I would really really like to know. Did Stevens ever acknowledge these models as such? Does anyone know Harlan Ellison? Does he know?

I've got the Deluxe version of Rocketeer. Its extra material is mostly artwork, but with some info.
Peevy, Cliff Secord's friend, is based on Doug Wildey. Animator for Hanna-Barbera and a close friend of Stevens.
Not mentioned in the book, for obvious copyright issues, is the use of old pulp heroes. Doc Savage in the first story and The Shadow in NY Adventure (Jonas).

That's pretty neat. I had heard the Doc Savage thing before but I don't think so about the Shadow nor Peevy. With the spotting of the Lon Chaney lookalike and possibly the person from FREAKS, it just seems like a early version of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I tried looking online but can't find out anything. It's almost better in ROCKETEER because by this point, LoEG is just token references and no heart behind them. Being a new fan of the ROCKETEER, it makes it all the more better to find out that Stevens would put friends and favorite film actors/characters into his work that I too enjoy. I just hope someone knows if it is or not. I would hate to find out that Stevens never confirmed a appreciation for Lon Chaney films and if it is him.

Just a quick notice:
Dave Stevens: The Complete Sketchbook Collection seems to be back in print, so buy it now when it's still available.
http://www.amazon.com/Dave-Stevens-Complete-Sketchbook-Collection/dp/1613770375/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1340521979&sr=1-4
And don't forget to also buy Dave Stevens' Stories & Covers, coming later this summer.

Is there a thread some place yet for the new series, The Rocketeer and the Cargo of Doom?

I picked it up this week and had a ball with it. Great story, characters, and nods to pulp/adventure classics. Anyone else check it out?

The Rocketeer and the Cargo of Doom #2 is out today. Anyone out there pick it up? How does it rate?
