The beginning of Transformers for me and many others. My knowledge of the Formers came from the screen long before I saw it in printer, the latter gained within the last three years sadly. Now for the longest time this was all I knew and it was good enough for me. No one would ever say it was perfect, especially with its animation, although it did give us some of the best Voice Actors that exist such as Frank Welker and Peter Cullen. From the iconic theme song to its Superior Movie lets look back at the beginning of a legend.

Could you offer a subject of discussion for the thread rather than simply, "The cartoon happened. It was not perfect and it had Welker and Cullen in it"?

More of an appreciation thread than anything else. Although you could comment on the pic, with its two Shockwave's with Constructicon colours or the Seeker with the Onslaught palette.

Of course I just started the thread it can go where ever from here.

And Sunbow did manage quite a few, I used to wonder if they noticed or did it intentionally?

Boy o boy the Two Shockwaves could open up a hole can of backstory. Was Shockwave a part of a series of bots, who like Omega Supreme became the best of his series??? Heh heh.

Another seeker to add to the mix. Wink

I've been trying to find a picture of one scene in the Five Faces of Darkness where Galvatron is flying with the Sweeps and they are all different colours. Custom Sweeps would also open up a fair old bit of fan fiction/back story, maybe they went to the same place as my namesake? Laughing

On the subject of backstory who do you think came across the best in Sunbow, in regards to canon? I mean Shockwave was a non entity and Grimlock was well.. 'special'

Jazz. That voice, those smooth moves... Shame he only listened to one song. But he's the guy who's remained pretty much untouched and was pitched just right in the cartoon.

Cool, laid back, but pretty damn competent when he needed to be.

I think the cartoons portrayal of Starscream is overrated. They got him right most of the time... and Latta's voice takes some beating. But stuff like "I'm stupid! Stupid!" kinda spoiled the effect for me.
And Soundwave. If Furman hadn't happened I'd have thought Soundwave was a perfectly fine non-character. I still cringe when he talks like that in the comics.

It really is increadible what fans will cling to in order to add a modicrum of extra backstory.

You mean like those all-important scenes where they prove the Autobots are ACTUALLY the bad guys, or that Starscream and Megatron are totally hot for each other because of some throwaway dialogue Starscream and Megatron exchanged in episode 17 of season 2 or something?

Maybe It's just too early in the morning, but I'm not quite getting your point here. Explanation please?

Well, it makes more sense when you realise that he means to say "incredible" and "modicum".

Ugh, sorry Urzu, it was late (early?) and I was feeling grotty so in hindsight that reads kinda arsey. In the cold light of sobriety, perhaps a better way of saying it is that it's quite interesting how we, as fans (because I've done it myself), will eke out every inch of history and backstory, implied or otherwise, from these mediums, particularly when we feel the medium hasn't done a good enough job by itself.

I know a Grimlock fan who hates both the Sunbow series and later Animated for their portrayal of him as stupid. Although it was the Sunbow series that got my friend into the comics to begin with.

On the subject of Soundwave though I actually prefer the Sunbow version to much of the comics. Being raised on Sunbow I find him too 'chatty' in most other media. Probably the only time I didn't have a problem with it was in Megatron: Origin.

The Sunbow series was were it all started for me. Then I saw the toys and comic and was hooked. Like most of us I have every episode on DVD. Some of the animation is ropey in places with a number of glaring errors and colouring issues and some of the stories were poor. However for its day and remember we are talking mid eighties here we had some really good stories too.

Most episodes had the same incidental music and I never really looked at it from a continuity point of view as Marvel UK was canon as fas as I was concerned at the time. It was great putting a voice to each character like Prime(Cullen), Megatron(Welker) and Grimlock ( Berger)

Grimlock wasnt quite as stupid in the comics as he sometimes came across in the series while I thought SS portrayal in both the series and comics was pretty consistent.

Its not perfect (nothing is) but I enjoyed it at the time and still like to watch the odd episode now and again.
