After we get through the main Eastman/Laird canon issues, I think it would be most satisfying to collect all TMNT works by writers/artists given TMNT's scattered yet colorful history. After all, Mark Martin's work is quite a contrast from Michael Zulli's. Also, each writer tends to have their own vision that mostly did not touch on continuity, even those issues that were released in the main series. I would love to have a TMNT Presents: "Eric Talbot" or "Tristan Jones" or "A.C. Farley" which compiles all of their TMNT work, including short backup stories that they did for reprints or Turtle Soup into a single book, similar to Shell Shock but focused on one writer/artist. This way, each volume will have a sense of congruity and we have an excuse to collect all those short stories that most people have never had a chance to read, but should! I think this makes more sense than to collect Michael Zulli and Rich Hedden together in one volume just because they happen to have issues released chronologically next to each other. Naturally for those who do not have enough contributions to merit their own volume, we can combine with another (I.E. Mark Martin with Rich Hedden/Tom McWeeney).

All good ideas!!! I would like to see either an Ultimate or trade collection of Turtle Soup, the Savage Dragon mini, and all of the issues of Usagi Yojimbo that the Turtles appeared in (both the Fantographics and Mirage volumes of Usagi). I really loved volume 1 and can't wait for volume 2. I really hope they release every issue from the original first volume. I will buy each of these that comes out, so keep them coming!!!!

Has the Tales of TMNT ever been collected in trade or anything, I only have about half the issues and wouldn't mind some trades (or hardcovers) collecting that series as well. I really hope Turtle Mania sweeps the nation again!!!

It said July 3rd release date and I remember someone said they list their stuff 2 weeks after it comes out in comic shops. So tenatively 3rd week of June or so . I'm sure Bobby will be able to give us a better idea after vol. 2 comes out.

I have'nt gotten my copy yet but i'd like to ask how this book is produced.

Are pages scanned from original art, prints or straight from comic books?
Is there any pixelation? Are pictures sharp?

Hopefully the book does'nt get damaged during shipment...

It's been a couple weeks since I've cracked mine open but the scans are very clean and appear to possibly be from comics. They're certainly not from original art as those are scattered in collections and such.

From the pages I read through, pixelation and clarity was not a problem. It's like whoever put the book together went in, scanned the pages (which would be HUGE) and adjusted down to the Collection's size. Smile

I don't think the scans look clean at all, myself. There's heavy pixelation on every page. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to that sort of thing... On top of that, the first two or three issues are printed very light.

It's not the great reproduction I had hoped it would be; I'm very much let down by this so-called Ultimate Collection. Half-assed scanning, crucial artwork that gets lots in the binding, DuoShade toning that almost looks washed out probably due to improper cleanup and pixely scanning... I'll stick to the 1990 trade as my reading/art ogling preference.

I really hope IDW step up the quality on book two and beyond. I wanna support the line to see the Turtles comics collected, but I don't know how much longer I'll support it if they continue to look this poor.

And yes, they're definitely scanned from comics, which wouldn't be bad if they'd have more quality control. To my knowledge, most of the original artwork is scattered all over the place in the possession of collectors, which is a real shame.

That's shame! I don't understand why it's so difficult to make "perfect" book...

I thought that this will be the highest quality collection of these comics. Hopefully people let's producers know about these flaws. They really should be corrected in second collection.

The art is very important and deserves better!

I don't see the issues with my copy that Abnormal Freak is complaining. My copy is great, a true masterpiece, I have zero pages that look pixelated. It is easily worth the $50 price tag, I won't hesitate to buy each additional volume that comes out.

I have two copies, the regular edition and the B&W cover IDW exclusive, and the interiors are exactly the same. So unless I somehow managed to get the only two copies of the book which look bad, I'd wager they ALL look the same and you're just not seeing the problems that I am.

Like I said above, I tend to be more sensitive to visual flaws be it printed materials or video, so maybe it really is a non-issue to most and things look totally peachy-keen; but for the hawk-eyed, observant weirdos like me, there are flaws aplenty. :p

It's not like gigantic pixels or anything, but if you were to look real closely to the lineart, you'd see that the curved lines aren't smooth but jagged and pixely. Trouble is, I don't have to look closely to see it.

I'll do some scans soon so you can see the problems blown up, comparing to scans from individual issues and maybe then you'll see what's buggin' me.

Ugh! Y'know what IDW did? They appear to have gotten the master files for the 2009 Mirage trade! I was flipping through the IDW book again and remembering how the last Mirage trade also looked pixely and printed light for the first four issues, and also how it was missing a lot of tones (e.g., Leo's sword on the two-page title spread of the first issue; note how most of the toning toward the middle of the blade is completely gone), so I did a side-by-side comparison, and sure enough, the two books look identical, same flaws in all the same places—IDW just printed the pages bigger.

:|

I expected more from IDW than to rehash the garbage Mirage were doing. What's next? An IDW Tales of the TMNT Vol. 1 trade which rehashes the same thing that Mirage put out as the Treasury Edition? 'Cos if you hear me bickering and whining now, you should see how awful that book looks, particularly for issue #5 which is so washed out and faded it's inexcusable.

Here I thought IDW would actually do the Turtles justice since Mirage's trades have for the most part been really awful, especially within the last few years of them releasing titles. Super pixelated scans and washed out artwork were the norm of Mirage trades from 2007–2009. And here IDW repackaged it...

Edit: After the first four issues, the IDW collection doesn't look that bad. The pixelation really irritates me, but aside from that they recreate the art properly for the most part. (The last issue, 7, is missing a lot of toning.) But those first three issues, especially the first, are really soft and hazy, not well-defined like they ought to be, and the first issue is missing so many tones it's ridiculous. I'll have to scan the pages just to show you guys HOW much detail is missing.

Mirage probably scanned 2009 trade in low resolution from aged original art. Now IDW is using that poorly produced book as a source material for two first collections.

If 2009 trade is now the best source material available and original art is lost, i don't complain... Why didn't IDW ask collectors to lend their pages for this collection? I think that the complete first issue was sold couple of years ago and it shouldn't be very difficult to find!
I would've been pleased if they had found just couple of the original pages and replaced those pixels! I wonder how IDW will continue with third and fourth book. It really looks like they aren't investing very much into this project...

Presenting those early issues in large format isn't really a big deal - we just see pixels better! Maybe we're getting THE SUPER ULTIMATE COLLECTION in the future... Bad reproduction has always been a real curse for TMNT!

Hopefully series editors are reading these forums!

with the immortal words of raphael, ninja turtle..:'does the phrase 'go suck a lemon' hold any meaning to ya?', memmil!!!

man, what is your problem here?you raised your voice in complain already, many have answered your concerns, though only one other member here agrees with you, be that as it may, your problem has been heard, so quit messing with the idw guys about your 'luxury-problems', may I remind you that many of these stories that we are getting here have NEVER seen a reprint and that a LOT of people haven't got the chance to experience them at all?..I agree with you in the point that these comics deserve to get a high quality treatment for they are great great comics!....but apart from abnormal freak nobody can even see these pixels you are referring to all the time...so, it is upmost important to make these beautiful works available again in decent condition(and according to most things I have read about them they are quite nicely done)!!!
I believe the folks at idw care a great deal about everything turtles right now, as posts here and there have shown, and I sure hope they won't be influenced too much by these little naggers here and there, also memmil, you haven't even bought the book so far, so what's your basis for your argument?you cannot even judge the situation fairly when you don't have a copy yourself...and like you said you have the 2009 mirage tpb, which looks great to my eyes by the way, so this IS just a luxury problem, let's keep the people in mind that don't even know about original turtles action and experience them for the first time.
