I've read on the Technodrome forums that when Mirage was preparing the Treasury Edition of the Original Tales of the TMNT Vol. 1 TPB, they had trouble finding good copies of some of the original artwork, and they had to scan in photocopies of the issues. Would IDW run into these same problems if they wanted to reprint Tales Vol. 1?

Can't they just re-print the 2007 Treasury edition then? That way we'll also get the Spinal Tapped story and the new frontipieces.

I certainly wouldn't want just a straight reprint of Mirage's Treasury Edition. For one, I'd like all the original frontispieces (plus the Treasury ones and all the other exclusive content as a bonus at the end of the book). Two, issue 5 looks really bad. A lot of the artwork is faded, line art and toning disappear altogether. The issue looks like total crap, especially compared to how it appeared in single issue form and the original Tales Vol. 1 collection. All the other issues are kind of affected in the same way although not as bad. But a lot of toning does disappear.

Other than that, the Treasury Edition is a surprisingly well-done book—by Mirage standards, that is. It doesn't have all the pixelated scanned art that a lot of the other later-period Mirage trades do.

The lack of quality masters may be a detriment or perhaps a setback, but I don't think it will be a dealbreaker. IDW will find a way to release the issues if they want, even if it means cleaning up actual issue scans.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Does anyone have the original TALES TPB?
I've never seen a copy in person, and I'm curious how the reproduction was on that one.

Does IDW have access to the original film, or did that all go away in Kevin Eastman's eBay sale?

I've got both trades, and the original one is very good. The paper stock is slightly less newsprinty than the single issues (the ink doesn't rub off like with the single issues), and comparing the first two issues, the first issue in the trade looks better than my individual copy (ink's laid on a little heavier, more solidly black).

So yeah, it's a good collection with a really nice wraparound cover. Plus it's got a short story at the end titled "Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", which I don't think has been printed anywhere else. (It's not in Shell Shock, anyway.)

My only sort-of-gripe is the covers are printed very tiny* and in black and white. The full wraparound art is shown, at least. (*Instead of displaying the art sideways to fill up the page, they display it left-to-right, leaving a huge margin at the top—more than half of each cover page is blank.) The '07 Treasury trade doesn't display the covers at all, so...

im sure they wont have a problem re-printing tales vol 1, shoot if anything they could use the 2007 edition, but also work on the pages that mirage didnt do to well on with photoshop and what not.
