I reviewed Star Trek: Burden of Knowledge #1 over at Kitty's Pryde
Writers: Scott & David Tipton
Artist: Federica Manfredi
This is my first IDW Star Trek comic. So I'm not sure how well they've handled the others.
This particular one the writers did a good job with the characters personalities and the artist did good with the likenesses.
That being said, I don't understand what the point of this comic was. It starts and it ends. It seems like an episode from the old show. Beginning, middle and resolution at the end.
But for a mini-series? There's no hook to continue reading. It works for TV and would work for an ongoing as a one-and-done story, but there just is nothing to make anyone pick up the second issue.
The conflict ends. We know we haven't gotten the full story and that is most likely what the future issues will be about, but there's nothing to make us want to go and find out.
The resolution ends a little too simply. Including a yellow shirt in the Away Team is a twist, as it's usually a red shirt. But then if you see the red shirt you know he's going to die.
I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Lt. Thompson. I think his cure is going to tie into the future issues of this series.
But again, that's just me assuming. There's nothing that leads someone to want to read more to find out what.
On it's own, it's a very good episode of Star Trek. All the bullet items for a good ST episode are there. As part one? It's lacking the essential hooks to make us want to continue reading.
Art wise it's solid. The second set of aliens look a little on the goofy side and the first set of aliens expressions are a tad cartoony at parts. But Manfredi does excellant in a couple of scenes with showing emotion on the faces of the two races of aliens.
The movement lines that appear a couple of times around the Away Team seem out of place and distracting. They're unnecessary. They don't really convey movement as much as they convey the characters shaking in place.
I'll end up getting #2 just because I want to see if this particular story continues and I want to see what the 'Burden of Knowledge' really is as there is nothing in this story that relates to that title.
Would I expect others to continue reading? Probably not. Only diehard Star Trek fans I think would.
Star Trek: Burden of Knowledge #1 receives
3.5 out of 5 (as a stand alone tale)
2.5 out of 5 (as the 1st part of a series) _________________ The Comixverse is looking for some News correspondants.

The folks at TrekWeb have published their review, with stellar notices for my artistic collaborators Manfredi, Priorini, Corroney and Stribling, and a kind word or two for my brother and I as well. Check it out:

I have issue one of BoK sitting in my comics stack, but I haven't read it yet. Probably get to it sometime today. _________________

That's good. I hope it does, but the groundwork needs to be laid for that, so the bigger picture, not revealed, is started to be laid out so the reader knows theres a bigger purpose behind it all. _________________ The Comixverse is looking for some News correspondants.

Issue 2 was really damn good. I enjoyed it a lot, it was a fantastic story. The art's been really great too. The artist (I'm blanking on her name) has been really good at nailing character likenesses for a lot of the shots. She draws a great Spock.
I've also really liked how they've had the title of the story in a panel with a shot of the Enterprise just like how they did it back on the show, it's a great visual cue that helps it make it feel like an episode.
I hope that continues in other series, would be neat to see that same trick done in a Next Generation book. (If they ever do another one that is) _________________ "Let us make sure, that history never forgets the name...Enterprise."--Captain Picard |
