I don't think there's a problem with abbreviating the names, but I think the point is their full code name should be used first before being abbreviated. It would be like me saying I enjoyed "ATRCONHP." What the hell does that mean? I see it on forums all the time and it annoys me when people expect you to know every single acronym in existence. My example is "And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place" from Babylon 5's third season.
But you would have no way of knowing that if I didn't mention it first. If the Joes are gonna call Dial-Tone something like "DT" how are new readers gonna know who is who? It would be different if there were profiles, but IDW isn't exactly fond on the concept. _________________ The preceding post is OK to print. |

This was a really good issue! Best out of all the issues so far. I can't wait for the next issue now! I loved the interaction between Shipwreck and Covergirl. Shipwreck is my favorite Joe so I was really happy to see him in here. Hopefully he'll get his own story in Origins.
Snake Eyes throwing his blackberry out the window after he read "Love Red." Was that supposed to be a code from Scarlett that them communicating with each other was not private? |

I can't believe in the age of Twitter and texting that we're complaining about abreviations.
Come on I'm thirty six. I'm way to young to get all grumpy assed about the way the young 'uns name each other, shorten things down and wear their pants.
(A group of young kids suddenly walk by)
DAMMIT! PULL UP YER PANTS FER CHRISE SAKES!! I DON"T WANNA SEE YER ASS HANGIN' ALL OVER THE PLACE!! 'AN GET THAT SH*T OUTA YER FACE!! YA LOOK LIKE YA JUST KISSED A DAMNED CHAIN SAW FOR CHRISE SAKES!!
(All the kids shoot Rev the bird and keep on walkin')
That's what a thought. You jussa keep on a walkin' too.

By using nicknames of the codenames, the writer is assuming that the audience knows the characters by there look and the shortened name.
Personal, I am not much a fan of it but it works because it gives the team members a friendship & camaraderie feel between them.
But the real issue is about any new readers. A new reader to Joe isn't going to know that Torp or Deep is a shorten name they are just going to think it is their full codename.
Heck, in the same issue they introduced Cover Girl by saying her code name is Cover Girl. And it works out great with the joke in the end.
It might not be real to say the full codename in a context of the story but it is really big necessary part of keeping track of the Joes, it is hard enough as it is. _________________ GI Joe comic fan since 1982

I think it was code to let him know NOT to follow the instructions in the message; that she had been compromised and any attempt to bring information to her physically would lead to his arrest as well. |
